Another old 4 x 4 trick in bad traction situations is to put the emergency brake on a bit - it stops the wheels from spinning as much. Note that it's a different effect than VDC, because there's no power cut involved.
DONT! use boiling water.. thats the dumbest thing u can do... that water is going to turn to ice and you'll bee stuck there for longer..
Also, don't sit there and spin out for long.. The heat from your tires will cause the snow to melt into water which will turn into ice again..
My trick is to slam it from reverse to drive really fast... you need to rock ur car back and forth..
I was in the same situation on an inclined driveway in my bro's SL500 mercedes.. it took forever to get up there.

Well, the first thing I've always heard is engaging the e-brake. The two things I know my dad used when he lived in the north was salt/sand and they had some old rugs that they would use to and apparently worked wonders.
