A car doesn't just magically lose traction unless you hit a patch of water, ice or crap road. You did something to upset the car. I wouldn't worry too much about losing confidence in your G, more like confidence in your judgment. Lesson learned I hope. Also, there's no such thing as an SLK550. SL550 yes. SLK55 AMG yes. But no SLK550.
I'll confess, I didn't rev match into 3rd I wasn't really thinking properly as it was sort of late at night and the benz was disappearing on me. I think you're right though, that's probably what happened that caused my car to lose control. I feel a little better now that I sort of have somebody to talk it over with.

As for the SLK 550, I thought there wasn't such a thing. But I was pretty sure I saw the letters "SLK" and a 550 following it after. I just googled it up. The car more resembles an SL 55 so I'll just treat it as an SL 55 then

Not that its a big deal but I assumed since you said, "and a pretty new model too" that it was an SL since the new gen came out not too long ago. I think the new gen SLK comes out in 2012. It is easy to confuse MB model designations.

An abrupt lane change and down shifting from 4th to 3rd shouldn't have upset
your car unless there was something else involved. Like poor quality or bald
tires, water/ice something on the road. Try it again at a lesser speed and
see how your car reacts....glad you're safe! That's some scary ****....Ouch!

this happened to me today, i just didnt overstear. when you down shifted into 3rd and punched it your rear wheels started to spin and kicked out to the right causing you to go left (thats why the vdc light came on). its a very scray situation but you came out of it alive and now have more experience!
