I'm curious how you do this. Do you just drain the oil and put it back into the car after you change the filter?

Seems like an interesting concept.

IMO, if you change your oil and filter regularly on time than there should be no problems regardless of brand.

Just get underneath, pull down on the undercarriage housing a little and unscrew the old filter and put a new one in. I lose about a 1/2 to 1 cup per filter change. The angle of the filter is such that you don't have it all drain out upon removal of the filter.

OP, Fram filters are not the best--- for a few $$ more, you can get a top quality filter like Pure One, Bosch or Wix. By the way, if you're getting a Fram filter with 5 qts. of Castrol for $29, you're actually paying too much to begin with. Look around.

Because 95% of people don't know any better/don't really care and they buy whatever they see advertised most. With the advent of this InterWebZ thingie, though, we have access to better information and can make better choices.

I honestly think if you just change our your oil/ filter every 3k miles, you'll be good to go.

Never, ever use a Fram filter for anything high performance. The construction materials and methods are the worst of any other major-brand filter on the market. They're probably fine if you change them every 3K miles maximum, on some other engine besides a VQ, but the anti-reversion valve in them is either nonexistant or just doesn't work most of the time, which can lead to premature engine damage.

Where can I find 5qts. of Castrol edge synthetic for cheaper then $29.99?

That actually was pretty funny, if completely unscientific. I would never buy a filter that generated more than 2-3 'whattafukcs'

I buy the 5qt jugs at WalMart and it seems like it's right around $25-$26.

Tell me, what does the VQ to a filter that makes the Fram so unsuitable for it but fine for others?

*Jeff knows the base Fram is not made well, that isn't the question*

I think Edge is in the $30 range. But I bought some when they were offering a rebate.

The trick is not to buy when you need it, but when you see a good sale/clearance. Last month I saw a Wal-mart clearance on Meguir's 32oz bottle of detailer, which usually sells for ~$15, going for $2 apiece-- I bought 5 and saved >$50. Likewise, they had Castrol full synthetic for $2.50 per quart and I bought 10, saving me around $40. I'm now good for a year on oil and detailer! It's like grocery shopping on a full vs. empty stomach!

Castrol Edge generally goes for $26.50 here, but it wavers up and down weekly.
