OP, Fram filters are not the best--- for a few $$ more, you can get a top quality filter like Pure One, Bosch or Wix. By the way, if you're getting a Fram filter with 5 qts. of Castrol for $29, you're actually paying too much to begin with. Look around.

^ Yup that works fine, I've done it.
Because 95% of people don't know any better/don't really care and they buy whatever they see advertised most. With the advent of this InterWebZ thingie, though, we have access to better information and can make better choices.

Never, ever use a Fram filter for anything high performance. The construction materials and methods are the worst of any other major-brand filter on the market. They're probably fine if you change them every 3K miles maximum, on some other engine besides a VQ, but the anti-reversion valve in them is either nonexistant or just doesn't work most of the time, which can lead to premature engine damage.

Just get underneath, pull down on the undercarriage housing a little and unscrew the old filter and put a new one in. I lose about a 1/2 to 1 cup per filter change. The angle of the filter is such that you don't have it all drain out upon removal of the filter.

*Jeff knows the base Fram is not made well, that isn't the question*

Castrol Edge generally goes for $26.50 here, but it wavers up and down weekly.
