Just how much should an air filter cost ??

Hi,
I'm being charge $55 to replace my air filter ( G35X, 2005 with only 40K miles)
Yes, only 40K.

Anyway, I think I got a cheap coupon oil change, and they're making up for it with the air filter.

What do you think?

Plus, anyone have a coupon for the air filter, and transmission service?

There's no way I doing anything but the air filter right now, but looks like I'm going to have to have all the fluids replaced -- $500 plus job for that !!

Thanks for the help,
DaScubaLady

Alright...I won't be pissed that I came in for a $30 oil change, and leaving with close to a $100 bill.
Seems that $30 buck oil change has lots of extra fees.

Now on to the next thing...Service Mgr tells me that all my fluids needs to be changed, and the transmission serviced. I say NO for now...but saw a HUGE estimate attached to that service.

I don't even drive this stupid car anymore (hence the 40k milage) Oh, I didn't mention, that my brakes go every 15K. Another 500 plus... ok the car is ready.
Looking foward to replies.

LOL, I agree. This car is pretty stupid. I don't drive it that much either. Wait til you hit 60k. $200 for a valve cover. And you need 2. Oh yeah, the Nissan Maxima, which runs the same VQ35DE. The valve cover for that car is only $40.

$30 for an oil change is not bad.

I'm a "girl" too and had to learn to do most of my own work. I do hate how shops treat women and resent it so much that I decided to learn everything on my own or have someone teach me.

To date I've changed my own brakes, oil, and air and cabin filters. I've cleaned the throttle body and MAF sensor, changed the battery, rotated the tires, and too too many things to mention. For Xmas I asked for tools and got a torque wrench (now to learn how to use it) and several other tools. My next project is the serpentine belt. My problem is that I'm only 5'4" and weigh about 116, so I'm not very strong.

ScubaLady, you gotta read and read, then insist that the mechanics show you how to do things and not just fly you in and out. If I have to, I'll flash'em (nah, just kidding).

The guys here are extremely helpful and many know their stuff. There are DIY videos on YouTube and hear, so there's no lack of info. If you can stomach doing the work yourself, it can be interesting... well, not interesting but at least you're learning so that if you get stranded, you'll know what to do or what to look for.

OP, i would find a good mechanic to change out your fluids for FAR less if you don't want to or have the means to do it yourself. the dealer will rip you off for sure.

for instance, i had my tranny and power steering fluid both changed for $160.

Exactly, if you must take it to a dealership at least take it to Nissan instead (same thing but cheaper)! Get a second opinion on the fluids. I'd take it to another shop and ask them what services they would recommend without telling them what the dealer said. Still hard to believe either, because who knows, they may be in the mood to rip you a new one....shocking.

As for the oil change, $30 is just right. The extra fees are probably the cost of oil, the oil filter, washer, labor, and oil disposal fee.

As for the air filter, a monkey could do it. If you buy an OEM one online expect to pay around $20. Here is a step by step video:

Hope that helps, good luck!

Actually $30 is cheap. A normal cost of an oil change at the stealership is $55.
