I voted Chevron, and just as I hit the button, I remembered the station had switched over to Shell. Chevron bailed out of Virginia. For me it's more about the station being the only full-service locally-owned gas station left in town. If you look like you need help, or ask for it, they send someone out to pump for you. If you want your tire pressure checked, they have you pull up to bay 1 and set all the tire pressures per the door sill sticker. But I haven't gotten any free glasses yet.
Exxon/Mobile are the same (those results should be combined) - I voted under Mobile.
If I'm not near a Mobile and really need gas, I'll use Chevron... those are the only two I've ever use in 6+ years with this car (other than Shell one time)

Arco = BP
Mobil = Exxon
Also,
Phillips 66 = 76 = Conoco
Texaco = Chevron
And Shell works with Cheveron/Texaco, has bought out locations, and shares the same gasoline... so that might explain the switch.
Circle K sells all of the major brands depending on what region you live.

We know that different brands may fill at the same tank, yet different brands have different levels of additives. Does the truck driver add these additives? Odd . . .
In any case, refer to this site for the official word on which brands can be relied on to provide the proper level of detergents:

Oh, gosh. I don't want to start anything, but that's a very sparse list, and I can't find anything on the site to indicate why it should be considered authoritative. The history link goes to 76.com, a Phillips-Conoco site. If one major oil company is behind Top Tier, this may not be an unbiased list.
Mudgen - if you google gasoline additives you will find several non-brand articles that lead you to this Top Tier site, along with discussions about the history of legislated minimum required additives. Then you can draw your own conclusions. As for me, I have credit cards restricted to Esso and Petro-Canada, so I am satisfied to continue using them.
Sunsetrider, it does appear after searching as you said that they have some backing and acceptance in the industry and among car manufacturers.
They're not doing themselves any favor by not presenting more in the way of credentials on their own web site nor by linking to a single refiner's web site for what would appear to be an internal page.

I'm so **** my car's never ever ever got anything but Chevron 91 in its life. I've had my gauge tell me --- miles remaining but I will find a Chevron if I can before I get any other gas. Just personal preference...
