ahoy! on the verge of switching to the dark(light?) side.

Hello everyone,
I've been in the subie modding scene for about 7 years now, and it's time to grow up I think. I'm dead set on getting a g35x, since I don't think I can leave AWD, and I don't mind sedans. Hell looks like I'll even have to go with an automatic eh? I'm brand new to Infiniti and Nissan, but everything about them is promising. So, as a noobie, just looking for some insight, it's hard to find g35xs where I am, so I think it will be a little while before I can actually own one, not to mention that I blew up my subie, again. So I need to fix that and get it sold.
For starters, can someone enlighten me on major service intervals, the mileage you guys expect out of a well maintained G, and any other fodder you'd like to throw at me to convince me even more?
Thanks all,
Sincerely,
Koo Tran

It's just a regular car.. like all cars maintenance goes with how you drive it..

This is what I do..
Oil change & filter every 3-5k when I get off my ***
Plugs do it when I have a reason to (when I'm taking something apart in the engine bay).. but we use copper plugs so 60k-80k would be good
Valve adjustment I'm planning to do it every 60k (when i do plugs LOL)
coolant once a year
brake fluid once a year
Trans & diff I do with every other oil change..

if thats what you're looking for.. Now for the honest truth:
Oil Consumption problem is something we have.. search out forum.
You'll need to replace your door lock actuator or window motor or both eventually cause ours suck..
A dipstick designed our dipstick..

lol, I put in light too, to accommodate whichever side you feel you're on.
So, yeah, I worked at our local Subaru dealership for a few years so I know the basic line of maintenance and such. I suppose I'm asking like more Inifini/Nissan specific. For instance, Subaru requires timing belt replacement at 105k, and if you don't do it around then, I'd start to worry, you know? Does Inifiniti have any must do's like that? I've heard the, correct me if I'm wrong, VQ35(?) engines are considered quite bulletproof, as in, there isn't a whole bunch that people have to worry about going wrong.
After reading that thread, I think I'm going to try to get an 05 or newer, but that all depends on how much I can sell my subie for. Main reason I ask, other than general knowledge, is that there is someone selling an 05 G35x with mostly freeway miles. Claims to have all the service receipts, and the car looks like its in pretty good shape. Only downside is that it has 167k on it. So I don't know if that's something I should steer clear from or if that's generally ok. Of course everyone wants low miles, but like I said, they are hard to find around here.

I guess I should also note, I'm not planning on building a race car as much as I'd like to, I'm leaving the subie scene because I've dumped waaaaay to much money in it. I just want a nice, [U]dependable[U] daily driver. Although I'd have to throw on an exhaust because they sound sooooo sexy.

Our axle bolt gets loose and starts clicking sometime.. You'll hear it upon a deadstop.. just follow our popular DTB.. aside from that nothing important..

Headunit is retarded and starts developing its own brain after a few years.. which is why a lot of us have aftermarket headunits. fortunately for us the japanese version of our G35s come with a touch screen so we buy their dash kit and our own aftermarket radio =)

many of the older parts have been discontinued.. such as clear sidemarkers, oem aero kit, etc.. but there are aftermarket replacements/replicas to satisfy that market. (We make bodykits so lmk =P)

Another issue is our diff is a vlsd so not an actual gear or clutch diff.. so high mileage G is usually an open diff..

Our biggest problem is the oil consumption (i'd like to say early 06 was the worst). solution is to redo piston/piston rings or to just get a G under warranty and blow it for replacement.

mm thats about it.. pretty solid car.. I'm really happy with it.

The oil consumption problem is almost exclusively on the rev-up engine, so you probably won't run into that with an AWD (it's a non rev-up). And I'd say our window motor and regulator problems are above average, but still pretty rare. Nissan still hasn't completely figured those two out yet (I replaced 3 on my old Maxima).

Change your fluids regularly and there's a good chance you'll get 150K-200K out of this car. You'll hear a lot of haters bashing the VQ engine, but the fact is it's one of the best and most reliable engines on the road.

You cant go wrong getting a G35xS. You don't have to worry about the oil consumption. It's handling is really tight for a luxury sedan. Acceleration is also really nice. You wont find a classier daily driver that is more fun to drive than this.

I upgraded from an 04 G35x to an 08 G35xS and the difference is significant. If you are coming from a tricked out subie, you will appreciate the difference over a VQ35.

Broadly, there are 2 generations of Sedans, specifically, each has a couple of sub-gens (these are my terms).

03-04 was Gen 1a (yes, I'm ignoring doggie door variation).
05-06 was Gen 1b. Same basic design, with some mostly cosmetic differences (hood, bumpers, interior, etc.).
07-08 was Gen 2a. New body, and basically the same engine with some mild performance tweaks (306HP, 270TQ). These are still called G35, but you get Base, Journey, Sport, or X as variations.
09+ is Gen 2b. Same body as Gen 2a, but now with a 3.7L engine and 7-speed AT. These are G37's, again with Base, Journey, etc.

A G35xS is the AWD version (x) with the Sport package (S). This combination was possible starting with the Gen 2's.

I see, thanks for that clarification. Well, as much as I'd love the xS, I'm just not ballin enough for one. I'm going to try for an 05 I think.
