Are G and Z steering racks interchangeable?

Are G and Z steering racks interchangeable?

Need to replace mine today! Car-part.com lists Sedan, Coupe, and Transmission Type separate...I'll be using my current inner and outer tie rods.

The aftermarket non-OEM part number is the same for Coupe/Sedan RWD, and different for G AWD. So, I'm guessing I could use a 350Z, G coupe on my G as long as it's not AWD?

Thanks,
Aaron

Yea, and how would I do that? If I call Infiniti they may say the parts are different because the whole rack is sold with inner and outer tie rods. They wanted about 1100 brand new for it!!!

And all the junk yards I've called have the steering rack still on the car, so it's not like I can go there and measure it. That would be too easy.

I gave the Infiniti Dealership two VIN numbers and they gave me the part numbers for the steering racks. Both are different part numbers. But didn't know what is different about the parts.

Steering rack part number

Shaking, meaning steering wheel shaking? A little bit, but it feels like my whole car is shaking. I also have a lot of vibration through the pedals. Hitting bumps are also pretty harsh. I've replaced every suspension part too.

The other day I hit a pot hole and ever since then my steering wheel feels like it isn't connected to the wheels. I also noticed that when the car is off and I turn the steering wheel side to side there is a banging noise coming from the steering rack. Check out the video below.

I think this recent pot hole busted the steering rack for good. I smacked a curb a few years back with the front driver side wheel which bent tie rods (replaced) but never looked at the steering rack until recently after I hit the pot hole.

These HAVE to be the same (excluding AWD). The racks look identical!!!!!!!! I've been browsing pictures on eBay and there seems to be no difference. Why would the transmission matter? The rack isn't touching it at all...

man, that sounds terrible!...d@mn potholes. Looks like your problem is different. Unfortunately, for the few of us...we can't figure out what the h3ll is causing the shakes.

In the middle of swapping steering racks. I CANNOT remove both outer tie rods. I've been hammering them for a while and even used a tie rod separator. I have everything else disconnected except one of the inner tie rods on the steering rack I bought at the junkyard. I'M SO FURIOUS

Finished the job and everything went back together properly Hahaha Didn't fix the original noise from the video, both of my parents cars do the same thing. Oh well..the steering feels a little more connected now. Gonna drive on the highway tomorrow and see what's up.

A 2003 G Sedan RWD Auto fit on my 2004 G Sedan RWD MT. All the same racks other than AWD which has different mounting bolts.

Glad you worked it out. What was the solution to getting the pesky tie rod off? I'm really curious to know what is causing the knocking in your video, it's certainly not normal on our cars and I've never heard that in a G.

Supported directly next to the underside of the tire rod with a solid jack stand that put upward pressure on the hub. Then, used a thick metal rod about 1/2" in diameter with a rounded end to hit the tie rod threads with a sledge hammer.

It doesn't seem normal, but the noise happens in BOTH of my parents cars. Kinda weird because I've never heard it before until recently. My steering does feel a little better after a short test drive. Can't wait to drive it on the highway.
