Questions about manual vs. automatic transmission
I am looking into buying a used g35 coupe. I am wondering if there are any differences between the manual and automatic version when it comes to maintenance/problems. For instance with a manual vehicle I know I would have to worry about the clutch and that sort of thing. Would one be more reliable (especially buying a used version)?
Basically I am looking for a more calculated reason to choose one over the other. At this point, I am leaning towards the 6MT if only because of the fun factor. My mom has the sedan, and I do know that it has the override where you can "shift". I know neither version is wrong, just trying to gather facts (also the 6MT are much more rare in my area-Phoenix).
Another fact- I have never owned a stick vehicle before. Is there anything inherently difficult about this car as far as a manual transmission? I own a motorcycle, and there is something about feeling that power in my hands (or feet) that I really enjoy. However, I have heard that some manual cars are "harder" to drive than others, although I believe this is more based on the age.
Appreciate any feedback in advance.

The 05/06 manual transmissions are rev-up motors, which most say are more known for their oil consumption problem. The 03mt syncros are weaker than the other years. I would research the oil consumption issue before you buy an 05-06. Automatics are typically a little less to maintain (typically)
Some say that this car has a pretty hard stick transmission to drive. I don't have any problem with mine really. Just a different feel.
It all depends on what you plan on doing with the car...

Two ways to look at it: Manual tranny, clutch goes....costs you $5-900+ to replace. Auto tranny, tranny goes....costs you $1700-2k+ to replace. I'd personally rather replace a clutch than an entire tranny. Plus, like you said, the 6mt is waaaay more fun to drive. These cars do have a wierd clutch/pedal though that might make it difficult to learn for a newbie, nothing major though. That being said, I wouldn't buy anything other than a 6mt for a G coupe.
Buy the latest model year you can afford with the lowest miles. It doesn't matter if you buy the 6MT or 5AT they're both fun to drive. Members with the MT wouldn't drive anything else, the rest of us got very tired of shifting in traffic....Gary

And I live in hilly san francisco....
no excuses.
6MT all the way. Mechanically I can't really help but my 04 coupe is the first manual transmission car I've ever had and I love it. The clutch can be tricky with these cars but once you get the hang of it you'll love it.
