Oil change help

So i purchased my '05 G35 coupe a couple of months ago and I just completed my FIRST oil change. I think it was approx 4k-5k miles since the guy before me changed the oil. I used Royal Purple 5w30 oil and RP filter as well.

So everything was fine, except when I went to put the old oil into the empty quart containers, I realized i only filled up 1 and 1/2 quarts with old oil! So I only had a quart and a half of oil in the car?! No "oil" light came on since I have had the car, nothing like that.

Also, the oil dip stick in the G is not very good. Its a pain to get it in the right place, and when I checked it after my oil change, I could not get an accurate reading, there was oil on 3/4 of the dip stick, I only put in 4 1/2 quarts.

Does anybody have any insight?

Check the oil consumption thread.

VQ's, especially 05-07 manual's are known to burn oil. If your car is still under warranty, you may be eligible for a new motor. There is a TSB for this issue.

Our cars have a very poorly designed dipstick. Readings are horribly inaccurate. Let it sit for 30-40 minutes after driving and/or after filling up with oil.

There should be cross hatches on the dip stick. If there is oil on the cross hatches, you are safe. Let it sit, on level groung for 30 or 40 min. as suggested above and check it again. Once the oil is on the cross hatches, it doesn't take much to get it full, so be careful adding oil. FYI you are correct the dip stick location sux. The Auto's also burn a little, it is the nature of the VQ35DE. i have the auto trans.

Do you mean to say that when you check the oil, if the level is exactly and the low mark (bottom of the hatches) you're only short 1 quart?

Do not add 5qts . You will be over filling it. The car only holds 4.7qts w/filter. Put 4.5qts and you will be fine. Adding 5 qts to an engine designed to hold less is very bad .

At my job when I was a mechanic we had to do oil changes on every make and model. And no one could remember all that info. So we had a book that has every make and model from 1990 -> 2012. it also shows dry capacity for evetyrhing , like trans, cooling, eng, diff. I will find out the name when I get back to work monday.
