It's not displacement, it's strictly a numbering system similar to the A4, A5, etc. The model changes are described with model years.

As dumb as this move is at this point in time, it sort of makes sense from a global perspective... only sort of...

"Infiniti" as a brand is going through aggressive growth in new markets, Europe, Mid-East, etc. where the established "luxury" brands are the typical Audi, BMW, Volvo, etc. How are Audi cars named? A3, A4, A5, A6 So having a similar scheme for Infiniti Q50, Q60, Q70 etc somewhat matches an easily recognizable hierarchy. So plus 1 for attempting to simplify naming for comparison in new markets, minus 15 for following the crowd.

Also, BMW hasn't used the last numbers to match engine size in a while now, a 335i and 328i are both 3.0L engines.

The G, and arguably the F, has become iconic, and this naming convention further confuses people by making people think of an old flagship model (Q45) without actually producing one (unless the Q70 is intended to be that).

I am not a fan of this change.
Totally agree, way to isolate the market that put Infiniti on the map in the first place. They couldn't build a proper Q flagship, so now they're ALL Q's! That was easy, bonuses for everyone!

I would guess the next generation would still be a Q50.

Makes sense now.... new CEO came from Audi, so obviously he wants to copy that...

The renaming is Johan de Nysschen’s first big, visible move since taking the CEO spot at Infiniti in July. Lured from Audi, de Nysschen’s charge is to reposition Infiniti from Acura-level purveyor of leathery Nissans to a global luxury brand that can rake in money from beyond the borders of NAFTA.

Some snippets from the Infiniti social brand manager on the FB.

"...model badging will appear on the top right and where appropriate, AWD will be badged on the lower left-hand side of the rear deck lid. Powertrain identification will be badged on the front fenders of each model, just behind the front wheels."

"IPL will remain for Coupe and Convertible, appearing after the model name, for example Q60 IPL. Technology components such as powertrain identification (including hybrid and engine displacement/fuel type) will be badged on the front fenders of each model."

The first thing I thought of when I heard this was Audi. Something tells me that's not the thought process Infiniti was looking for.

"Hey honey, what do you think about the Q...ooooooh what about an Audi?"

So the real question is if the g37 is now Q60. What does that make the G35 ?
