2015 G37 to be renamed Q40
2015 G37 to be renamed Q40

I'm not hung up on badging, to me it's the car and the price, but admittedly so far Infiniti's move appears a flop similar to Acura giving up its loyal following of Integra and Legend names. Based on this news, it does appear the G will live on at least until 2015 - I wasn't sure as I have yet to see any G's listed as 2014's in any dealership online.
I love my '08 G35x sedan - great performance, and after 6 years and 60k the only issue has been some trim peeling on the wheel and door pulls; other than that bullet proof to date. I will be in the market for a replacement for my '99 SUV in a year or two and a second G would be a definite consideration. My question for the forum is whether in 2015 the G37/Q40 will mechanically be competitive with Audi, Lexus, Volvo etc. I don't care about gadgets such as Twitter or Facebook apps while I'm driving 75 mph, but I wonder about engineering advancements as the G37/Q40 is largely unchanged from 2009.

The Q50 was originally slated to replace it, but it's a completely different model.
The starting pricepoint however was higher than a G37, so the G37 was kept as the entry-level model. The options however have been cut. You pretty much can only get a RWD Journey (never hear anyone other than dealer use this term) or the X, and with a few packages.

Oh, that has been discussed. Infinitis old naming scheme was too complex. No ordinary person knew the difference between G, M, FX, JX, EX, QX. New convention is to make line more easily recognisable, like BMW and MB. It gives free ego boost to the most vauluable customers (ie those willing to spend the most) because people can instantly know if you drive the most expensive (new Q100 flagship) or the cheapest (Q30).

Badge engineering at it's finest.
I was upset too but it makes sense. Currently the naming of the G series is based off of the engine's displacement. With engine displacement bound to diminish in size in the following years it make sense to change the name now rather then calling it the G37-B or something.
So much for even numbers being coupes and odd being sedans (Q50 Q70, sedans, Q60 coupe) plus keeping the G37 around is just weird. That chassis has been around since 2007, it's getting a little dated. Let it go.

OP, seems this got out of you were asking...
As far as your question to consider a replacement for your SUV and keep up with the competition, my believe is to get the new Q50 as it was made to challenge the completion you're talking about. G37/Q40 has been around for 6+ years and they have just updated a few things, but overall has stayed the same as far as performance and handling. Even though the G37 with a few tweeks can achieve that, you're talking about straight up stock trim if I'm not mistaking.
Either way, I'm glad you're liking your X.
P.S. I have no idea why people hate on the Q50, its a nice car IMO. Seen it on the street, it just needs a few things for it to be killer. Like a simple drop and some staggered wheels. that's it.
