Summer tires in cold weather

It's 10 degrees here in chicago and -2 wind chill.

the road's are dry now, but how bad would it be to take my G out with the stock 19's and the 40 profile tires

From reading the forums..I have heard that the stock summer tires start losing traction as the temperature lowers. At 10 degrees I can only imagine that the tires will not perform very safely. However, as long as the roads are dry and you take it easy on the throttle, I think you should be ok. I would, however, think about investing in some all seasons or even winter tires. I did, and they perform excellent in the cold weather and snow.

Your summer tires need at least 40 degrees to soften enough to do their job.

For your own, and everyone else's safety, don't go out in cold weather with summer rubber on.

$870 for 17 rims and tires from Tirerack.com, just in case you find your 19's aren't keeping you safe.

^^ a lot cheaper than a fender bender.
JM2C But it's not only that....your actions could impact someone else.

Running summer tires for extended periods in temps below 50 degrees will significantly reduce their life. The compounds in the tire will harden and it's irreversible. Often times the summer tires will begin to chunk.

As for driving in sub freezing weather with any tire, if Chicago streets are anything like Kansas City streets and have a film of dried de-icer, it can be flat out dangerous. It is terribly easy for me to whip out the tail on 5AT sedan with the littlest provocation or light them up threw 1st and peg the limiter in a split second. These are dry streets too. You have to be careful and I wouldn't suggest turning off the VDC. My G has all-season rubber too.

it should be alright for temporary usage, but i would definite change to AS or winter tires for prolonged cold weather usage.

I got these rims:

http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Displ...atin+Sil+Paint

And these tires:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Sizes....l=Graspic+DS-2

The tirerack guy suggested the 225/50/17's when I told him I didn't want a staggered set up (so I can rotate all my tires). These Graspics aren't performance winter tires, so they are a little squishy and reduce the performance handling of the car, but for the winter I just want to get places safe and sound, and when the summer rolls around the 19's will go back in when I do autoxing and a track day or two when I can. I'm on a budget so saving the couple hundred by getting the Graspics instead of more expensive performance winter tires was important to me.
