Does uncapped vinegar lose its potency like hydrogen peroxide does? I've got a 2L tupperware container filled with vinegar sitting on the passenger side. Gonna put the lid on when I drive, then un-cap it when at work.
AfroPuff, I found this on a website: To remove the smell of smoke from a car or other vehicle, leave a pot of vinegar in the vehicle overnight. Sprinkle the seats liberally with baking soda or carpet freshener and let sit overnight as well. Vacuum in the morning.
I know that cig smoke is not the same as skunk, but the principle is what should make it work.
I also looked at a couple more websites for skunk odor removal and it suggests washing the exterior part of the car where the skunk odor is with diluted vinegar in water.
Vinegar has hundreds of uses, however, not everything works all the time.
If it doesn't work, I suggest you rent an ozone machine. You use it at night. Plug it in and leave it in your car with the windows up. An ozone machine obviously creates ozone. Ozone works this way: Ozone is a molecule composed of three atoms of oxygen. Two atoms of oxygen form the basic oxygen molecule--the oxygen we breathe that is essential to life. The third oxygen atom can detach from the ozone molecule, and re-attach to molecules of other substances, thereby altering their chemical composition.
Which will basically take foul smelling molecules and chemically convert them into harmless by-product. However, using an ozone machine does have risks. The same way it works on organic skunk odors, it can do the same on your body. If you use it, when you are done using it, open all doors to your vehicle and allow it to air out.
NOTE: I am not responsible for any health issues that might arise using an ozone machine. Whomever rents this machine to you, YOU make sure to know the in's and out's of it's workings.
I hope one of these suggestions works for you.

I have just read this whole thread from start to finish, and I can actually smell the skunk here, sitting at work in my office. These stories are so vivid, that I actually started caughing with disgust, or maybe I have just smelled the sucker too many times, that it brings back memories.
I wish all the luck to afro on getting the smell out. And definitely let us know what worked best.

Try some Ozium spray. You can pick it up at Wal-mart/Target/etc on the cheap. It was supposedly developed for hospitals to eliminate cigarette smoke, clean the air of bacteria, etc. Definitely agree that skunk is worse, but I've found it to be great stuff. If you've got a garage, maybe try opening all the doors, hood, trunk, etc., and spray it all over the outside, inside, and under the car. But go inside quick though! You'll probably die of the fumes if you don't!
Damn that fvcker got me good!!! Been a week now. It's eery how much vinegar smells like skunk. I can't tell if the skunk smell is still inside or its the vinegar. Well, if anyone wanted to know, vinegar does not lose any of its potency. After three days of being uncapped, it's still strong as ever. Gave the car and undercarriage a bath with the remaining amount.
Verdict: Car still smells like skunk. I damn near almost fainted when I jacked the car up and removed the front passenger wheel. Bastard must have been angled up into the wheel wheel.
I went to a pet store to see if they had a concentrated odor eater, not looking for a masker. When the ladies found out it was a skunk, both recommended blue Dawn. Gave it glowing reviews for getting rid of skunk spray. Going to give it a highly concentrated dawn wash as soon as I recover from the vinegar bath. I should have worn a gas mask.

Sorry to hear that AfroPuff. That skunk must have used every ounce in him.
Let it air out. Hope it gets better for you.
Everyone swears it's gone, but I think I can still smell it if I take a bump too hard or slam the brakes. It's jostles the embedded skunk molecules in creases that can't get washed. I'm dumb paranoid though... every time I catch a faint whiff of skunk somewhere I pray that it's not my car.
