Re: winter is close what about ur summer tires

Just picked up some FRD 30's (5-Spoke, look great) with the Blizzak LM-22's to fit over the Brembo's.

Here is the comparison between the stock and winter sizes:

Stock New
225/45/18 225/50/17
Diameter 26.0 Diameter 25.9
Circumference 81.6 Circumference 81.2
Radius 13.0 Radius 12.9
Revs/min 777 Revs/min 780

Stock New
245/45/18 235/50/17
Diameter 26.7 Diameter 26.3
Circumference 83.8 Circumference 82.5
Radius 13.3 Radius 13.1
Revs/min 756 Revs/min 768

Great fit!

Re: winter is close what about ur summer tires

I ran into the same dilemma for the 18".

Since I don't have the Brembos to worry about, I can go with 17" rims as tires for the 17's seem to be more plentiful and a little cheaper. Went ahead and picked up a set up 350Z 17" rims over the summer.

From there I just did some calculations from the miata.com website published on the site in several places to get an idea what kind of range I had to work in.

So as Haggis4All pointed out the dimensions for the 18's and 17', you can use this for calculating the best available tire for you. It does look like there is a little room to keep the Rev/Mile compatible. I would prefer a taller tire for snow, so I would keep the width narrower.

The more I thought about the affects of the snow, salt and competition with drivers who don't know how to drive in snow. Plus with no access to a regular underbody wash (no car washes for this G), I have put off making this decision for now and picked up a well used Ford F-150 4x4 this weekend for just a bit more than the cost of a good set of snow tires.

In the part of the country I'm in, this really made much more sense to leave the G parked on the bad days/weeks. I can easily imagine where it could get beyond drivable for the G even with snow tires very quickly. Heck just getting up my 200' driveway can be challenging at times even with four-wheel drive. Just the thought of leaving the G high centered on a drift with folks playing billards with their cars all around just made me queasy.

This probably did not help much, but wanted to let you see there might be another alternative to getting snows.

Now I have to figure out whether I want to keep the 17 rims or not...

Good luck.
