RESULTS: 6MT Tranny Problem

Well, after 5 weeks at the dealer and me constantly insisting that something was wrong with my clutch or transmission, they finally got permission from Infiniti to start taking it apart and they found problem #1.

My pressure plate came apart from my clutch and was just spinning freely. It also broke my clutch into a million pieces. Apparently I drove with the car like this for a long time. It was not driver error, but an error from the assembly line of the car. How weird is that?!?!?! They said that they had never seen anything like it before. They replaced my bearings, clutch, and pressure plate and put it all back together and were going to test drive it today and see how it is now. I may not need the new tranny if all the problems go away with just the new clutch.

I will keep you posted on whatever else I find out

no, the dealer never called about it today, so I didn't get it back yet...plus I have to break in the new clutch for 500 miles...there is no way I will do that before tomorrow. I will run my other car.

Re: RESULTS: 6MT Tranny Problem

G35Girlie: what were the symptoms of your broken clutch? My shifting is really notchy. In addition, it sometimes grinds when I shift even though I *know* I've got the clutch fully depressed...

thanks

Re: RESULTS: 6MT Tranny Problem

I "thought" my 6MT was feeling a little notchy as well, sometimes not getting into 2nd under hard acceleration (knowing 100% that I've cluthed it). I took it in and had service take a look at it. They claim nothins wrong, but atleast it's been recorded. One time I even noticed my clutch pedal drop all the way to the floor. No pressure what so ever. Everything worked fine, car shifted like normal, but it took no effort to press the clutch. Really weird huh? It lasted for a whole 5min and then tightened up. It's never happen again, nor has Infiniti been able to explain what went wrong. Nevertheless, like I said, its been recorded and noted so if I were to have any future prblems with my trans, they can't say well you should have brought it in....

Re: RESULTS: 6MT Tranny Problem

What were the symptoms before the fix? My G has a "rattle" noise all the way in first gear, and partway through second gear. Shifts fine, however. Anyone else get this?

Re: RESULTS: 6MT Tranny Problem

Thats where I had the noise...When I would shift from first to second. When I would put the clutch in, it would sound like a lound spinning noise, then a clunk, then it would go away. Also, when I would be stopped or in first gear rolling, there was a rotating grinding noise. When I would put the cluthc in, it would go away, then I would take the clutch out and it would come back. I thought that was the throwout bearing. I also have a grinding/unsmooth shift into 1st and third gears

Re: RESULTS: 6MT Tranny Problem

No rings on these fingers! But you bring up an interesting though. I think I will start a new thread asking my question. Check it out, I'll post it right now...

Re: RESULTS: 6MT Tranny Problem

I have some of the same problems.
grinding in 2nd 3rd and 4th. like it's a tooth off when I shift.
and strange noises coming from what I think is the clutch.
and a couple of times it felt like I just ripped it out of first when the clutch was to the floor. And I've been denied when shifting into 2nd 4th and 6th and had to release the clutch and press it again to get it to go in.

When I asked the dealer about it, they took it for a test drive and said they didn't notice anything. But they documented everything.

When i tried to describe the clutch noises, I said it sounded like cheap quality. and they service guy looked like he was about to have a heart attack. and went on to say I can't compare an Infiniti clutch to other clutches. blah blah blah....I guess I offended him a little.
