notchy shifting!!!

does anyone else have a notchy shifter? i just passed the 5100 mile mark on my car...and my transmission is still notchy. most gears are usually ok, except for 3rd gear. there is always one notch that really bugs me. will the dealer fix this? POS shifter IMO.

My shifter is still a bit notchy, but not as bad as when I first got the car. You'll get use to it.

Re: notchy shifting!!!

Everyone with a 6MT has at leaset one gear that is notchy. I believe that they are made with brass couplings or bushings which make them feel notchy. From all the complaints, they will be changing them to copper to satisfy all the people's complaints. Copper will wear down faster than the brass will. I'll put up with my notchy 5th gear to get a more durable tranny.

Re: notchy shifting!!!

Many of the magazines that tested this car discussed the mechanical feel of the shifter and approve, this is not considered a negative thing by them. I have found the groove and have less issue with it all the time. I can tell you for certain though that this transmission is great when you are running it through hard. Precise and certain. You want a real notchy shift, try Ferrari.

Re: notchy shifting!!!

i dont mind the notchiness either, it actually feels better to me than having a sloppy/slushy box.

5th gear is super notchy for me as well

Re: notchy shifting!!!

When ou say notchy, are you talking about 3rd feeling like it's a tooth off when you shift?

That's what it feels like for me. and I've also noticed it in 2nd and forth, but mostly 3rd.

Two other things I noticed:
a couple of times when shifting out of first during stop and go, it felt like I was just ripping it out of gear with out the clutch. and the clutch was to the floor.

While accelerating, on a few different occasions, I've tried to shift to second, forth, or sixth and was denied. I had to release the clutch and press it again to get it to go in.

When I asked the dealer about it, they took it for a test drive and said they didn't notice anything. they suck!

I like the quick, notchy feeling with each shift.

Re: notchy shifting!!!

5th gear is always notchy to me but I'm more than used to it now. However, I especially like the little snick snick sound it makes when I go from 2nd to 3rd...sounds so mechanical and nice.

Re: notchy shifting!!!

Hey peoples,

I just remembered this. I use to have a 98 maxima and about a year in to it I had a short throw shifter put in. The shifting was perfect until I had the clutch replaced around 100k. It got really notchy so when I went back, the guys at the shop adjusted the shifter linkage and the car was as good as new. I wonder if any one has looked in to this.
