5AT vs 6MT

hey guys, how much faster is the 6MT compared to the 5AT? i've been trying to research it on the internet w/ no avail. I'm just curious cause i only see performance times for the stick.

Re: 5AT vs 6MT

Judging from the AT times here, I would guess that an abused 6MT is about 0.2 seconds faster than an abused 5AT to 60 mph and 0.3 seconds faster than an abused 5AT in the 1/4 mile, but I'm relying on magazine numbers for the MT, which I know have been off for the AT. On the other hand, the MT probably received more thorough testing, and doesn't have the ECU quirks.

Anyway, the numbers aren't a good reason to choose MT vs. AT unless you're dedicating the car to track racing, in which case AT is obviously out and you probably shouldn't be buying a G35 in the first place (not a good long-term track car, too expensive to maintain and loaded with lots of unneeded luxuries).

The reason to buy the MT is if the pleasures of a direct connection with your car outweigh the frustrations of day-to-day driving. Flip them around for the AT. It's a great driving car, highly suitable for MT. It also has one of the most responsive ATs out there (once it's properly trained), so that's not as big a sacrifice as usual. Test drive them both and decide for yourself.

Re: 5AT vs 6MT

i completely agree with JDMan...
numbers aren't a good reason to choose MT vs. AT since both are really close each other... this car is not like RX-8 where MT will kill AT anytime... choose which tranny you prefer... best way is to ahead and test drive both of them....

Re: 5AT vs 6MT

I completelly agree too, but just keep in mind that the AT will have only a couple of miles on it and will dive differently after a while, better in my opinion. I have 13k miles on my AT and its much different then when I got it new.

Yep. JDMan said it all. They both drive great. It's really just a preference. Not really any performance difference that you'd notice.

Re: 5AT vs 6MT

You'll notice it in the 1/4 when you're staring at the license plate of a 6MT since he's 3 car lengths ahead of you.

But if the driver of the manual transmission misses a gear or is too slow shifting he or she will be looking at your rear.

Re: 5AT vs 6MT

The first 3 cars I had were MT. The next two were AT. I was in the mood to shift again and ordered the 6MT Coupe.
The coupe will be a garage kept, weekend only, nice day vehicle.
My 98 EB Expedition I will continue to drive to work and all.

W order - 6mt DG/G - Everything except satelite radio

*sniffle*
It's nice to see the AT/MT people living happily together instead of flinging poo at eachother like monkeys. It's happened in the past

I agree with what everyone's said-- the numbers aren't the biggest reason to choose, as a perfectly driven MT will have an advantage over the AT, but then again-- can you drive it perfectly? Ooh, a challenge If this is you "fun, ***** and giggles" car, MT is nice to have just for the feeling, but if this is your daily driver and others might be behind the wheel, the AT might be wiser. Both are exceptional fun, though.

Hey I agree get the one that you feel most comfortable driving day to day.

Hey G35Gnome I have found over my years of tuning that the more you do to your vehicle does not mean that you will run faster times let me know what you think. I noticed all that you have done to your vehicle, and I'm sure it is a Sweet Machine. I ran a 0 to 60 time 5.7 secs 1/4 Mile 14.7 secs
60 ft time 2.32

Re: 5AT vs 6MT

Yes my time isnt very good at 14.469 @ 97.61 thats because my 60ft is 2.399 sec, why ? well because the pilots cant handle the power well enough at the strip, I spin them for a good half a second every time. Next year I am getting dedicated set of drag radials for the rear, with this setup I will do 13.9 in a quarter for sure. 1badG's car did 14 flat and yes its an AT.

Re: 5AT vs 6MT

I was ready to sling some poop at TrentaCinque but have decided not to. Three cars lengths is funny - still laughing -. As GeoBau said, MT may have an advantage if driven prerfectly - where's Boris Said when you need him.
