new trans in my coupe?

Guys, I just got a new trans put in my coupe....Turns out my rattling noise was bad throw-out bearings. I also had a gearbox problem. So they just gave me a whole new transmission.

Question:
Do I have to baby this thing for a "break-in" period. Is a trans like an engine in that regard. If so, how long till I can "drive" this thing?

Thanks...

Re: new trans in my coupe?

From experience with previous tranny swaps in other cars, I'd say yes. It is best to "break-in" the tranny by taking it easy on the shifter and not forcing it or race shifting. Then change the fluid to a good one at 1000 miles. Thats just my experience.

Re: new trans in my coupe?

I've heard this rattling noise when starting in 1st gear at around 1000 miles, but doesn't happen all the time. How can I have a bad bearing after such a short time? The first 500 miles were majority freeway miles, so there was not a lot of shifting going on.

Woah Woah Woah, There is a fix for the Rattle from the tranny. I must have missed the memo. Could you guys post any information that you have as far as getting it fixed? I.E. What complaints you made to the dealer, TSB if any, etc. It sounded so bad the other night one of my friends thought my car was gonna explode. I kinda got used to it so I didn't notice it till he said something but damn it was bad. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanx

Re: new trans in my coupe?

you have to be careful when getting the tranny fluid. there is a specific fluid that is used by all cars. for example some american cars might use a different one then japanese cars. plus there are different grades of tranny fluid. make sure to whatever other tranny fluid it has those special "ingridients"

a good brand to consider is ....MOBIL 1, AMSOIL, ROYAL PURPLE.

Re: new trans in my coupe?

as far as a "fix" for the rattling noise. I am not sure if it really was the throw-out bearing or not. I suspect it was because thats what my friends told me (the ones that know more about cars than me). However the dealer just confirmed that they looked "worn-out". So whether or not that was the rattling, or it was something else in the transmission, I will never know becuase after getting the whole thing replaced, it is hard to tell exactly what part it was.

By the way, it sounds like I should take it easy for a while on the new transmission. Can anyone define a while?

Re: new trans in my coupe?

Oh **** guys I just dropped mine off for the same problem. Seems only to occur after I've driven for at least 30 minutes. It was REALLY loud the other night when I went through the drive thru. I complained about it once and the dealer inspected it and said there was nothing wrong. What gives? Is there a TSB for this? It sounds exactly like my old Toyota truck when I had to replace the throw out bearing. By the way my car has about 16k on it. ERRRRRRRR....

Gforce...

same here...mine was making all kinds of strange noises. Mainly when the car was at idle, you would here a spinning metal type noise. I would put hte clutch in and it would go away. Take the clutch out and it would come back. Another noise I had was when shifting from first to second. It sounded like a metal rolling and throwing type sound. It was weird. I ended up getting a new clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, and all new bearings out of it. I have to break in the new stuff for 500 miles now and see how it acts. if I find anyhting else wrong they are going to replace the whole tranny next.

Re: new trans in my coupe?

There's apparently lots of 6-speed transmission and clutch problems out there.

FreshAlloy has a transmission failure thread and my350Z has several threads on manual transmission problems. More than one thread has noted Nissan is on the third internal design -- syncros, second/third gear, ? --

I thought someone with a 6-speed would have addressed this issue on one of our G35Driver forums. Did I miss it?

G35Girlie--

I am curious to hear if your rattling noise is gone completely after all of your new parts? Also, is about 500 mi the appropriate break in for those parts? I am still trying to figure out how long I should take it easy.

Re: new trans in my coupe?

Come to think of it, I have noticed the same thing on my car. The "rattle" only comes around after driving for a while (more than 30 minutes) and when the car is in idle with the clutch out. I am going to have it looked at soon. The car only has ~13,000 miles on it, most of it easy freeway miles.

Re: new trans in my coupe?

so far the noise is gone. I did 200 miles on it so far to break it in. The dealer and everyone else I know has told me that 500 miles is perfect to break it in. The clutch is already getting a lot easier to use. When I first got it back it was soo stiff and sticky. Now it is much better. I will keep you posted though. The only thing I have noticed still from my original complaints is that I still get the grinding going into 3rd gear. I will keep breaking it in though and see how that develops more.

Re: new trans in my coupe?

I'm not sure what kind of noises you guys are hearing...I've already had my tranny replaced because of grinding into 3rd and 5th...that was around 15K miles.

I had another problem the past 2 weeks where I would hear this, kind of like a bending metal / cricket sound. Thought it was coming from the front right area. Took it in and they couldn't hear it. It got progressively worse. It only does it when I take off in first, but then I could start to hear it going into second, and then it started doing it in reverse too. Took it in and they finally heard the noise. Mechanic said, "sometimes rocks get caught up in there"...yeah...whatever...I'm not stupid. Anywho...turns out they couldn't figure out what the problem was. They found that it was coming from the right rear tire area. They called the factory and they advised them to replace the whole right-rear axel assembly. Everything is fine now. Just wanted to post this cause I wasn't sure what kind of noises you guys were hearing...cause I originally thought mine was coming from the front as well. I have 21K+ now.

Hope this helps someone.
