that's funny, i was just about to ask this myself.

I was also wondering if there's a DIY for changing brake lines, or is this better left to a mechanic?

easy, as long as you know how to bleed then properly

StopTech has an excellent writeup on bleeding brakes. With 2 people,it's a piece of cake!

I think you should let safety related items for the pros. I have seen alot of guys trying to do brake work by themselves causing more harm then good. Just be carefull people, always use the right tool for the right job. DO NOT BLEED THE SYSTEM when your just replacing the pads.(some people actually do) Only time you bleed the system is when theres brake fluid involved in the work. Always double check and test drive after you service the brake. I dont care if you die but watch out for the other people around u =P
