06 G35 'vs' 06 Gli (vw)

Ok... I got this co-worker who just purchased a new GLI and he thinks it is the best car ever. He starts modding his new car and now thinks he can take my coupe not only light to light but, from a roll to 140+. Now I know my car and I dont think it is sick fast but it is definitly a faster than average. Here are my mods eibach springs, sways, wheels, z-tube, pop charger, iridium plugs, headers, stillen full exahust, gordee 10wire kit, SS underdrive pullies. And now his car chip, intake, wheels. I normaly dont intertain people like him but he is a freind and now he has taken it to the next level and challenged me out in front of my staff... What do you guys think? Can I beat him?

P.S. He says that he did 160+ this past weekend in his Jetta and his other buddies where going 180mph and said that I would never catch anyone of them.

This is prolly a tough one, those new 2.0t engines really wake up with a chip and a few mods. I used to work at a VW dealer and they were pretty quick stock but not near a G. I haven't driven a chipped one but i would think it could hold its own against a G, and all the 160mph+ crap sounds like a buch of BS to me since most cars can't reach those speeds. Only one way to find out if you can take him...

If thats the turbocharged version, then probably yea if he's got more than just those mods.

Then again its not for sure. His chip might not make that much to the wheel.

i found some info on the car. His 0-60 isnt that great and his quarter mile is 15.5. Of course those are just stats based on pro drivers. From light to light i think you can take him. From 140+ IMO i think his car would fall apart at about 120+. (past experience from a friend)

All i can say is take it to him and post what happend. *shrugs*

p.s. don't get caught by the po po's its end of the month and halloween

I don't care if his care is chipped or not. You should still be able to take him. If this was a modded R32, that's a different story.

Actually a modded R32 is most likely slower then a chipped 06 GLI unless its from a complete stop where the R takes advantage of the AWD. I've driven an R32 many times and other then the AWD and the intoxicating exhaust note they aren't all that. A stock G could deff take one. They don't respond too well to mods but once you S/C or Turbo them they are a real nice machine.

You'll definitely take him to 140mph though. Just make sure don't do it on the streets...

I ran into one of them before. I was on the highway just cruising around 60-70 mph suddenly a 06 vw Jette cuts me off and zooms by. Gave it a good chase, when I got next to him we were rolling around 60 then he was behind me the whole way trying to keep up.

if its a GLi then its not turbo. GLi is the VR6 motor, pretty peppy, but wtill, its only putting out about 200 horse, at the crank. MAYBE 220-230 w/ his mods, and thats being polite.

The '06-07 VW GLI has the 2.0T FSI motor.

With the DSG tranny, they feel quicker than they actually are, partly because of how throttle-responsive the engine is. Fun car, but nowhere near the power of a G35.

Stock-for-stock, the G35 (any model, any year, any tranny) will shame a GLI, based on my test driving of both. With some light mods (ECU upgrade, exhaust), a GLI may get into "driver's race" territory.

Regardless of the outcome of the race, you can rest assured that your car is 100x better looking

As a G35 Sedan owner, I can honestly say that I almost prefer the looks of the GLI... it's a bit less classy, but a bit more sporty.

If they weren't WWD (Wrong Wheel Drive) I would have bought a VW instead.

Ehh... 160mph? Did he mean kmph?

unlikely.

I dunno, if it's a simple chip and some breathing mods, then it'll be interesting. The car is a bit lighter, and that 2.0T is an excellent motor. Just dont be like that "I can't believe I lost to an S2000" guy if you lose.

i had a 20th ae gti with the 1.8t and my friend has a gli with the 2.0 turbo. he has intake full exhaust and chip and put down 240 whp and 280 tq so i wouldnt sneeze at him. also those dsg's run faster at the track than te 6 speed manual's so to be honest i think it will be a good race but after 130 i think you would walk due to displacement. let us know the outcome

I doubt a GLI with just ECU changes and exhaust will show that much power.

Here's a link showing peak 205whp and 241 wtq peaks from chip+exhaust:

http://www.eurotuner.com/techarticle...s/results.html

That's a FAR cry from 240whp/280wtq... it could not be attributed to a different chip+exhaust setup... your friend is either BS-ing you, or he's done more work than just that.

Besides, the 2.0T FSI VW motor's powerband is much narrower than the VQ35DE. The 2.0T feels fast in city traffic because of the flat, low-peak torque curve, but it runs out of steam quickly after 4500rpm, whereas the VQ will match the low torque rpm but keep running hard until 6500+ rpm.
