ok my car has a rattling noise upon start up but only when its cold. anyone get this? i have automatic engine start with my alarm and can stand in front of the car with hood open and cold start it but i dont see what that rattling noise is. anyone else get this

Hey I'm getting a strange rattling too when i start my car up and its cold. And i know exactly where it is...i beleive its the dust shield covering the front side of the muffler under the back of the car. Still gotta make a appt. with Infiniti though...we all know how that goes.

I have twice had an 'extra' noise on a cold start. It lasts less than a second and sounds to me like it's metal-on-metal until oil gets pumped to all internal parts. This is a concern to me ... does anyone have factual information about this? is there another thread that discusses this? thanks!

I noticed that noise for the first time two days ago.
I got in the car, depressed the clutch, turn the key, and there comes this weird rattling noise coming from the engine compartment. I was like WTF?!?!, I had the car for barley 3 months now, 3300 mils on the odo.
That evening, I got in the car again, this time the engine was warm, but no rattling sound this time.
WTF is going on?

I am also getting that rattling noise when I cold start as well fellas. It sounds like metal rattling or something. I think I had read in a different thread that, its the traction control or something but i doubt that it can make that noise. Also when you guys first drive off and step on the gas, do you hear like a clicking noise or something from the front? Just curious because I do and I've been assuming that thats normal.

i get the cold start rattle about every fifth cold start. read on the forum it was probably timming chain.
i do not like it at all.

well, now we know it has nothing to do with the tranny, considering the fact it happens on both MTs and ATs.
Maybe it has something to do with the alternator/starter, giving the engine its first spin during ignition?
Well, I probably will see the dealer within the next two weeks. If we don't get an answer by then, I promise to find out about it.

I do remember the CS saying the one of the things they check at your 15k service are some components including shields on the exhaust system. Maybe they are loose? I would see if you could leave it at the dealer and then try to have them do a cold start. I have to admit mine has almost 20K and I have yet to hear something as you guys describe. Maybe the crank chain rattles when it's cold? Hmmm... Dunno that's all I can think of right now. Dealer is your best bet. Good luck.

Its only been really cold once, but mine does the same thing. There are a lot of moving parts that don't move as well when its cold. The whole cars creaks and makes noise when its real cold, but it goes away. I'm not worried about it.....

I too get this rattling noise when the car is cold and it does sound like scraping metal. It is a 6mt I'm due for an oil change and will ask the dealer to check it out.

Here is a solution from the link above.

"I found a rather hack solution that seems to work everytime though...

When you turn the ignition, hold the key in the "start" position (against the spring tension) for about a half second longer than you normally do. I am in the habit of "flicking" the key to fire up the motor which is what I think most people do.

When I flick the ignition, I sometimes get the thump, when I hold it on a fraction of a second longer, no thump, ever."
