safe to park in an incline without e-brake?

I parked my G up on the driveway. I pulled the parking brake up and the minute I let go of the brake pedal, the car started rolling back. I hit the brake, pulled up the driveway again, and this time... I put it in 1st gear to keep it from rollin back.

Will leaving it parked in 1st gear for several days without the parking brake be alright?

Why would you engage first gear yet decide not to utilize the parking brake? If you must leave it in gear, pull up the parking brake as well.

Engage the parking brake first and then put it in 1st gear. Let the tranny be the backup just in case the parking brake fails.

It makes little sense to only put it in gear but not apply the e-brakes. It takes 2 seconds out of your life to reach over and pull the e-brakes. I'm sure it will take more than 2 seconds to run after your car rolling into the streets.

I think he meant that his parking brake failed.

yes. mine is usually adjusted at one of the service intervals. i think the manual says that it should started grabbing at 3 clicks or something. i've never had a problem with my parking brakes. but i know some people like to yank on it like there's no tomorrow. then they wonder why it doesn't work after a month

Answer is that it might not be alright. The car will not move down the driveway fast, but because compression in the engine will not hold for that long it could slowly move down to the curb. You should always try to use the parking brake enough to keep the car from rolling, and then, if you want, put the car in gear. I think reverse is a better choice for the gear, but first will work also. The direction doesn't matter, it's the ratio to engine revolution that's most important.

Personally, I'm in the habit of using just the parking brake since when I had a turbo'd Integra with a turbo timer. Can't leave it in gear if the engine is still going! My parking brake will hold the car easily on very steep driveways if it's pulled enough. Sometimes I can feel it slowly move back after I let go of the foot brake. In that situation I give it a couple more clicks. Get your brake adjusted/fixed if it won't hold the car.

Putting it in gear is just like putting an automatic in P. The downward force of slope is not going to be enough to turn that tranny+motor over which is what would have to happen for that car to move. I always use both though..

Parking brake not working............?

Your address says, the bay. Although I never assume but lets take it for
granted that you live in San Francisco. I know most areas of your city
are flat but in the city you've got some major hills. For safety sake get
your parking brake fixed and use both when you park or better yet if you
must park on an incline set your tires against the curb too.

No it's not. Automatic transmissions don't require an engine to even be installed in the car in order to keep the car from moving while in park. An auto tranny holds the car still because it has a built in Park-mechanism which locks the shaft to the transmission housing. If you try putting your manual transmission in gear with no motor in the car and don't use your e-brake, the car will roll away, whereas an auto will not.

If an automatic transmission worked just like a manual transmission in regards to park, you wouldn't be able to put the car into Park while the engine was running... or the car would still move forward.
