Loud Pop/Bang

Hello folks,

I have a 2003 A/T Coupe with about 8K miles on it. Lately, within the past few weeks, I've noticed a fairly loud and sharp pop sound if I accelerate hard. Everytime I've heard it, it happened between first and second gear driving in the manual shift mode with VDC off. Tonight it happened while shifting into second. I'm sitting here trying to think of a way to describe the sound, but basically it's just a single short pop. I tried to duplicate it and wasn't able to do it again. I searched around the forum and found a couple posts about a sound underneath the car but they described it completely different so I don't think this is related. There's a post from today about a popping sound but that didn't sound similar either. I'm curious if anyone here has experienced this or can speculate on what it could be; transmission, suspension, anything else? I do have an appointment to take it to the dealr next tuesday.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Loud Pop/Bang

If your using too low an octane or got bad gas that wouldn't be a "mis-fire", that would be DETONATION. Gas doesn't have anything to do with an ignition mis-firing. That's not good, I wouldn't get on it hard until you get it looked at if that's what it is.

I always use premium which is 93 ocatane most everywhere around St. Louis here. But I doubt this is a gas issue, this pop sound is loud and sounds like it comes from the right rear of the car. I will of course post the results after I take it in Tuesday but this worries me.

Re: Loud Pop/Bang

Happened to me exactly as you described it. It felt like something hit the outside of my car just in front of my right rear tire or just under the car in that location. I was on the street right in front of my work. I pulled into the parking lot and got out and checked it. It was so loud I was sure I would find some damage. I couldn't find anything, it looked fine. That was more than a month ago and it hasn't happened since. Please post any findings you get, I would love to know what had happened.

Oh, and I have an 04 AT coupe I was in MM in second accelerating fairly hard. I had VDC on. At the time I only had about 900 miles on the car.

Yes, that's a great way of describing it, like something hit your car. I was crawling under my car last night with a flashlight inspecting for damage but I couldn't find anything. It's happened to me about three time of the past couple months. But, at least I'll be able to tell the dealer that I'm not the only one with this problem. I'll definatly update this thread after the visit to the shop next week.

Re: Loud Pop/Bang

I just got my car back from Plaza Infiniti tonight. They couldn't find anything visibly wrong with the car and of course couldn't reproduce the problem on a test drive (I expected that). They mentioned they've had a couple similar problems on the G35 and found that the rear axle wasn't torqued down tight enough. They said they tightened mine down more and said if I have the problem again to bring it back in.

Re: Loud Pop/Bang

Check for loose things in the trunk including the spare tire and tools.
If that doesn't solve the problem look at the suspension for something amiss there.

Re: Loud Pop/Bang

Are you sure the car didnt do a neutral drop? My AT maxima would do this on occasion. It sounds like you hit a speed bump at 50 The whole car would shake.

Basically, it would get alittle confused and delay the shift, meanwhile RPM increases... when it does find the gear *BAAMMM*. I think its the adaptive/learning ECU getting confused when you go into MM mode. I havent felt this in the G yet while shifting up. But I have felt it in MM mode while slowing to a stoplight... it drops from 3rd to 1st and makes a noise like that.

Re: Loud Pop/Bang

Hi,
If you hit the rev limiter (6,600 rpms) it will go pop, or if you don't let up pop pop pop. This is because the computer is killing the ignition and fuel for a split second. ("No Harm Done")

Re: Loud Pop/Bang

The one time this happen to me the stereo was off I was between 4-5k in 3rd MM, never hit the redline or rev limiter. It wasn't so much that the whole car shook. Time for the bad analogy, it sounded like a kid had kicked a soccer ball really hard hitting just in front of my right rear tire. It was such a loud and forceful sound I was sure there would be damage, but I couldn't find anything. I'm still scratching my head over it. I'd be more concerned if it happen to me again. My coupe's ride is quite I don't even have the rattles and pops other people complain about. My guess would be in the suspension but I really don't have a clue.
