Re: Ideas on a cheap Winter Setup?

I managed to find some Dunlop WinterSport M3's. The only problem is that they are 40 series instead of 45 series. In other words, they are 225/40 R18 up front and 245/40 R18 out back.

It changes my speedo by about 3.5% (which at 80 MPH is off by less than 3 MPH). My dealer said it was OK and it has no bad effects on the VDC or ABS.

HOWEVER...it does look even better since the side walls are slightly shorter! I like the looks even more than with the stock 18's

Anyone buy the TireRack special on Winter Sport M3s?

235/45/18 all around at $89 each.

I just bought a set, and I haven't even taken delivery on my '04 G35c yet!

I bought them at a tire store named Bob Sumrel. I think it might be local to Cincinnati. But they had to order the tires.

How long have you had this setup and also how does the car drive? Any other problems beside the speedo?
Thanks

Re: Ideas on a cheap Winter Setup?

I've had it for 1.5 weeks. I've had no problems. The tread widths are the same so the handling is the same (as much as can be for snow tires).

Re: Ideas on a cheap Winter Setup?

Are you sure about the 235's on the rear? Will the rims handle those? Supposed to be 245 ... small difference, I know but am wondering about the handling, safety issue ... not to mention a slow tire leak at the seam where the tire meets the rim.

Re: Ideas on a cheap Winter Setup?

I have to second the beater car idea. I got my high miles '94 probe gt with snows/abs for less than the cost of some wheel/tire setups ($1300+reg) and I just drove out in a blizzard (ct) and it's awsome! My past 3 cars were rwd and while I would not own fwd for full time use it's awsome for a beater.
Plus there's something so freeing about not caring too much if you get snow/mud in it, get salt all over the body panels, or even slide into a fence and dent the fender...I'd rather not but if I do I won't be devestated.
Insurance was $34 a month extra for me...actually $55 but it let me get multicar discount so it ended up only being an extra $34...well worth it. I'm a 26yo male btw.
I might even park it on the street and keep it insured all year! My neihbors will love me..lol...
