Short race a 350z 2nite.

I was cruising at 50 mph minding my own business, chatting on my cell phone (ear piece) when I see some xenon lights approaching me kind of fast. I move to the middle lane so the car could past. Lo & behold it is a 350Z. He slows down to my cruising speed as if he wanted to admire my car. I paid him no mind b/c the roads where kind of wet and b/c I only have 850 miles on my car (not broken in yet). I let him admire my car for a couple of miles, than he pulls off fast and I chase. I dropped down to forth and caught up to him. By the time I was in 5th I was even with him. I saw oncoming traffic (I done race in and out of traffic) so, I let up on the gas. There was no need to further break my break in schedule, I had already caught up to him and was about to pass him. He kept going blasting in and out of traffic like a mad man. I think he had an auto by the way he pulled off. I thought the 350Z was faster than the G. I guess not tonight.

I hate to knit pick, but how was the Z slower if you never passed him and never really raced?

The Z was slower b/c I caught up to him when he took off in a racing manner. If the Z was faster, I would have never caught up to him.

540ia vs G35ca

I know this topic came up numerous times. But I'm in the market for a 2001 540ia(sport) or a new G35ca, I've test drove G35c 2 twice, the car just didnt seem fast enough for me, maybe it's because I had 2 passenger in the car and VDC was on. I have not driven a 540ia yet, but 300+ torque should feel alot faster then the G right? If not on paper?

are you sure z really gunned at you? no offense but z and g are about the same performance but z is little faster.. even with AT z can run as same as MT g... but tranny is not the problem here.. the point is if Z gunned it b4 you how can you catch up when z when g has same acceleration? whoever gets better luanch(or gun it in highway) wins race in z vs g...

umm.. you should loot at the wieght to tq(hp) ratio... more tq always doesn't mean faster... i'm not sure how heavy are those 540s but i'm sure they are 400+lbs more than our g... which even out with tq.. and i'm sure 540 MT runs about g level but no faster...

Re: 540ia vs G35ca

Jyupitt, I had a 540ia for 5 years. I loved that car. My 540ia did feel quicker than my current g35. My reasoning for this is that my g will get faster once its broken in. (I hope) Yeah, the 540ia is 3800 pounds, 400 more pounds than my G. That should equal out the torque advantage. But like I said before my 540ia felt faster. It might have something to do with the gearing of the 540. Well, I sold my car to my best friend and he wants to race after I break in my car. I really wouldn't mind a race b/c I would like to know which car is actually faster. One thing that I do know (PLEASE DON'T FLAME ME) is that the 540ia non-sport is rev-limited to 130mph and my G is rev-limited to 155. Top end power on a 540 is crazy. After 85 the car pulls like crazy to 130. Please, be aware that for some reason the e39 540 spends a lot of time in the shop. I had electrical problems, cooling issues (radiator neck that connects to the hose is made of plastic and will break off between 50-60k) 3 water pumps etc. Visit ROADFLY.COM and read the forum about the e39 540 before you go buy one. I loved the car but it had issues and those issues can get very expensive.

Re: Short race a 350z 2nite.

Uheenada - Yeah, the Z is faster from a stand still launch. But, I stated a launch from 50mph. This post by any means is not a kill. I just simply stated that the Z wasn't faster that night. Maybe the person missed a shift or was in D not MM, maybe I have newer tires with more grip. I don't know. I am just stating what happened. How much faster is a Z compared the a G .3 of a second?

Re: 540ia vs G35ca

Thanks for the input. I'm a frequent visitor on Roadfly.com i've been inside of a few 540i's, they felt very quick. Looks like a 540ia "feels" quicker than a g35c 6mt... What about handling?

My G handles better hands down. But, I had a non-sport 540ia.

I thought my G35c was a bit slow too during break in. Then as soon as i was done breaking her in, I gunned it. My neck still hurts to this day

Re: Short race a 350z 2nite.

Yea .. Speeds are about the same, but the Z is a lot shorter .. So when I drive one thru the heavy traffic on freeway I worry less about hittin my G's fat *ss on sometime. =)

And by the way, at highway speeds and above, weight difference becomes less a factor, and aerodynamics becomes important. The 350Z is lighter than the G35, but if I recall the G35 has a lower coefficient of drag.
