I never used a screwdriver, I suppose you can but heres the easy way to do it..

get your 2 fingers on inside the boot and pull towards yourself until you hear the clips release then simply pull up and its off

Mine was tight used the vise grib on the bottom and my big mitts on top and yelled at it to come off and it finally let loose

you won't damage the transmission. the most you can do is probably bend the shift linkage, which is very unlikely. stop being pansies.

I have an 06 coupe and hands down that was the hardest thing I've ever done on a car. The locktite was soo damn tite i swore i was going to do damage to the tranny. I ended up having to grab someone else to hold onto the shifter under the boot with a vice grip while i wrestled with the ****. Took a good 15 mins of fighting before it finally twisted off. But in the end it was definately worth it.
