Is my car burning rich?

Is my car burning rich?
I have 3000k miles on my 04 coupe. I mostly drive highway miles. I avg 19-20mpg. But, today I noticed I had a lot of black sut in and around my exhaust tips and a little on my bumper. I was always told that if you see a lot of black sut in your exhaust tips, than that means that you do alot of city driving or that you are burning rich. Is this normal for this car? I assume that everything is OK assuming that I didn't get a check engine light. My air intake is stock. I need to know if this is normal before I install my 350z tube and JWT popcharger.

Re: Is my car burning rich?
The soot on your exhaust is either coming from the gasoline or the oil burning... Therefore, by adding an intake, you are only varying the O2 going into the engine, while the amount of gasoline stays constant....
Therefore, wait until you have a couple more miles on it and see if it keeps happening consistently... Many people on this site have added aftermarket intakes which add more air to the combustion chamber and have not had any problems.... Better to be rich than lean ya know!

Carbon condenses out of the exhaust gasses onto the cold pipe. You can see this effect if you hold a match or lighter up to an aluminum can. Now if you're getting A LOT of black deposting on the paint surfaces around the exhaust there's probably something wrong but I'd imagine the OBDII would catch it before that.
