What Injen intake to get?

What are your experiences with Injen intakes? Just got my 6-spd coupe and want this as the first upgrade. Any special one I should consider? Any help would be great.

(want to stick with Injen brand)

Re: What Injen intake to get?

Does Injen make more than one kit for the 6MT? I guess maybe the CAI and possibly a shorter one?

They make a short ram for the sedan, but there is only one model for the coupe. The model number is RD1992. The intake does come in different finishes such as polished, black, blue and red.

Re: What Injen intake to get?

I understand that Injen makes good stuff, but since the Nismo intake is identical in design but also includes a bypass valve to prevent hydrolocking, why not get the Nismo? Even if the two cases I've read about weren't true or somehow unreasonable, why not be safe anyway? Cosmetics maybe? I do think the polished Injen looks nicer. Otherwise, since the cost is the same, I'd think the Nismo would be a no-brainer. Why does Injen seem to have such appeal? I'm curious since the performance is likely to be identical, and that is what people usually base mod decisions on.

Where can I price the Nismo intake other than their overseas website?

Re: What Injen intake to get?

Shader, you're hooked on this Nismo intake arent ya? LOL!

PS: That "bypass valve" robs HP! How? The whole point to a CAI is to get "cold air" into the engine and to keep the warm / hot air away from the inlet. By adding a "bypass valve" which is nothing more than a foam / screen element right inside the engine compartment, you're in a sense sucking in hot and cold air at the same time, which pretty much defeast the purpose of having a CAI...

i think people choose injen because it is CARB legal and the nismo isn't

Re: What Injen intake to get?

I'm curious...how much is the Nismo CAI going for nowadays?
At anyrate...for the 6mt Coupe...the RD1992 is the only one Injen makes for that car. I believe they also have a filter shield also to deflect excess dirt and debris away from the filter.

Re: What Injen intake to get?

Ducati, I measured the pressure very near the bypass valve (almost touching it) on the Nismo intake. There was no pressure drop at any RPM, high or low, nor during slow or fast revving. The foam is quite dense. The only way I could measure the pressure drop was to cover much of the cone filter with my hands, or to remove it entirely and cap the fitting. Under those circumstances the car behaved normally but sounded a bit different. All my data so far shows the Nismo was well engineered and is performing as designed.

My suspision is that Injen has a better street-presence, so more people know about it. I don't think people really care about CARB legality, particularly the car-mod crowd, and since the Nismo is virtually identical to the Injen, I don't think there is any emmission effect difference between the two. Injen likely just did the paperwork for compliance where Nismo did not.

Considering there have been two reported cases of bunged engines due to hydrolocking with the Injen, I think the Nismo is an equally-performing safer alternative.

Here's a link to the best place I've found to get the Nismo intake ($280), and there's a link in my sig to the install procedure with pics, audio, and video.

Re: What Injen intake to get?

What's really the probability of water seizing the engine? For it to travel that far (even with the engine vacuum) you would have to submerge the filter or be going really fast.

Re: What Injen intake to get?

In all honesty...
the probability of you seizing your engine due to water ingestion is pretty slim. I live in so. cal where it rains once a blue moon and hardly enough to produce huge puddles to submerge the whole front end in. I've had full CAI's on my previous 2 vehicles as well prior to my G, and all of them have never had bypass valves. My TL ahd an AEM Cold Air w/o a bypass valve, and I drove it through heavy rain, and some pretty deep puddles, but never once had a problem with the engine skipping a beat. I believe the bypass valve has proven to ever so slightly decrease the hp output , but it is a small price to pay for a little peace of mind. I believe the bypass valve has a rubber flap inside the foam element to keep it sealed as much as possible during normal use. When it feels the pressure loss from the filter being submerged, that flap should open instantly to let the air be sucked in through the foam element higher up. Of course the slight loss in hp is understandable considering the rubber flap is in no way as secure as a solid pipe.

I'd say if you are even remotely scared of hydrolocking, the nismo (AEM) unit would make you extremely happy. In terms of price, I'd be able to get you the Injen RD1992 in polished or Black for about $200 shipped. So there is a diff. in price in that you're paying a bit more for the bypass as well as the Nismo name.

I bought my Nismo cai at performancenissanparts.com. I think it was 249.99 +shipping. They're very quick and have great customer service.

Re: What Injen intake to get?

Well I got the Injen intake for about $60 cheaper, so thats why I went with it. Around $220 for a black polish intake for my 6MT Coupe. I also figured that since I live in Sunny San Diego, a water bypass valve was pretty useless to have.
