Too much Oil????

Hey guys, I just changed my oil. I'm no quite sure if this is bad or not, but everywhere I'm reading it's saying it's a horrible mistake to have too much oil.
I did an oil change and added exactly 5 quarts. And after I did it, I checked the dip stick and it read at about the 7/8 mark between the L and H. But now after I drove it around a little and it warmed up, the oil level is right in the middle of the H. This is pretty far above the criss-cross section and seems to be too much.
Any opinions? What are your levels at on a warm read? Do i have too much oil? The owners manual says 5 quarts, how did I end up with too much oil?

Re: Too much Oil????

How long did you wait after your drive to check your oil?... Let the engine sit a bit before you check it.

Re: Too much Oil????

I was just about to come back and elaborate no how I checked the engine oil. I drove it around and then let it sit on level ground with the engine off for two or so hours.
But that's usually something of concern when the dip stick reads low, it's because the oil hasn't settled yet. But the problem is I'm reading hi. What you guys think?

Re: Too much Oil????

Damn it. I just read about not using synthetic oil. I only have 3000 miles and I just changed to Mobil 1 pure synthetic. Oh man... Well, whateverz, I'll just go in and have my oil compeltely changed to non-syn oil. Man, what a drag.

Re: Too much Oil????

Who told you not to use synthetic? If you have 3k on it your engine is broken in enough to change to synthetic. It is recommended not to break an engine in with synthetic because it is too slippery for proper break-in.

Re: Too much Oil????

Yeah, supposedly you're supposed to wait until at least 1500 miles before you switch to synthetic. But supposedly with our car, some people on the forums were saying that it can take even up to 14K to break in completely. So, for now, I'm just gonna take it back to my mechnic and have him do a complete oil change. I've already done two oil changes in one weekend, I don't have time to do anymore.

Re: Too much Oil????

Bro- If you're level is only half way up the 'H' then you're only over by a few ounces.... Nothing to worry about at all.
Most shops that I've seen always put 1/4 to 1/2 inch on the stick too much oil and they say it's fine.
From what I've seen lately, the experts say not to go inches about full so don't worry about an 1/8"

As far as synthetic-- I changed mine to full sythetic at about 1500 miles. Yours with 3k will be just fine.

No worries man

Re: Too much Oil????

Thank you for the reassurance. I wasn't sure how much distance on the dipstick represented the corresponding volume of oil. I assumed since the range is only an inch, that 1/8 of an inch would be 1/2 or so of a quart.
I actually already got the oil changed. Even though, now I guess there really isn't anything to worry about. Something interestnig, I saw them put in exactly 5 quarts, and I just checked the dip stick and it's exactly where it was yesturday.
Meaning, with the residual oil left, 5 quarts is exactly where the line is drawn. So I guess I'm ok. But just to be sure, anyone know what their dipstick reads?

Re: Too much Oil????

I changed my oil this week and put in 5 qts. I only drained out 3.5 qts. I'm sure I burned off some oil and had some held up in the engine. My dipstick now reads about 1 cm below the "H" line.

as far as synthteic goes, oil analysis shows that the VQ35DE engine doesn't truly get broken in until around the 10,000 mile mark. Higher levels of silicon have been found in test results of those who switched to synthetic before 10k miles, indicating not complete engine break in.

please note i don't know much about this stuff and am just writing what I read on other forums such as maxima.org and bobistheoilguy.com

i changed to mobile 1 back at 3750 mi. running with M-108 filter, but will go to the larger M-110 filter at my next oil change. also will be sending in a sample to blackstone. will update when test is sent in.

airsplat, don't worry too much. seems you went a bit overboard by getting the oil changed again.

Re: Too much Oil????

5 qts is perfect when you change the oil filter at the same time, if you check it 10 to 20 minutes after you stopped the car it should be ok.

I checked mine 15 minutes after stopping the car and the oil was dead even with the H line.

Re: Too much Oil????

Thanks for the feedback guys.
That's so weird that you guys aren't over. I just checked my dip stick again, and the engine is cold right now and it's still right smake dab in the middle of the H. Isn't that wierd? And had them chand to the large oil filter too. And they put in exactly 5 quarts, and it's still so high. That's odd. You put in 5 quarts with your small oil filter and it's 1 cm BELOW? Wow! Huh... How's that work? Maybe my dipstick is off!? Well, I guess I'm ok, since I know they put in 5 quarts.
Thanks guys.

Re: Too much Oil????

nope its not weird.. most likely depending on the type of oil filter used and how much it can hold, it may vary ..... as far as I can recall .. mine was over too, and they put in 5 quart too, whereas after I saw it was over I looked at the manual and it says to fill 4.7 quarts worth....which would explain the "overfill"... so always leave abit in each quart or dont fully dump the last one in.

later.

Re: Too much Oil????

A mechanic once told me many years ago that it's better to be a quart low than to be a quart high in oil. The low mark on the dipstick is supposedly 1 quart low, and I was told that it was safer to add oil when it reaches that mark rather than sooner.

Since none of my cars have ever consumed oil, I've always errored on the slightly low side when changing my oil. So with the G35, I just use 4 1/2 liters each time, each time saving the 1/2 liter for the next change. It's always read full on the dipstick.

BTW, 1 Liters equals 1.05669 US Quarts

I'm inclined to agree with that mechanic whom you spoke to years ago, but adding enough to 'fill' properly is best, and I hate underfilling as much as overfilling.
If the oil level is low, then the oil will wear out and get dirty quicker--albeit only slightly quicker- but none-the-less quicker.
An overfill is much worse. This will allow the Crankshaft to 'splash' in the excess oil causing airation in the oil system resulting in poor (or no) lubrication. UGGGGGG.
To reach that level tho, one has to overfill by 2 or 3 quarts-- well above the normal slight overfill.
If I let mine drain completely for 10 minutes, with filter change, refill is exactly 4.7 litres.

Re: Too much Oil????

As I said, with 4.5 liters, the stick reads full, so maybe the .2 liters doesn't actually make much difference in the read. I've done this with the last several cars I've had that required .6 to .8 over, and the stick seems to read full. I'm always careful to take a read after a day of driving and regularly after that, and it seems to work for me.
