Had run-in with 330i today
I was cruising on my way to work and coming out of a construction zone on the highway, I had a 330i sittting on my tail. As soon as the cones were out of the left lane I got over an got on it a little. The 330i jumped back on my bumper. So, I really got on it. As soon as I hit 4th gear, was pulling him badly. In 5th I was just walking away him.
We started coming up on traffic, so I slowed down. He changed lanes to try to get around, but couldn't due to traffic. He got back behind me again. I got around the cars to the left of me and he jumped on my bumper again. I got on it and walked him again.
I was back in the left lane accelerating just over 120 while he was in the center lame over 10 car lengths back trying to catch up, but just falling further behind. I started coming up on traffic again, so I slowed down. There was a car in the left lane in front of me and the center lane in front of him. My exit was coming up, so I was just going to work my way over the right to get off. He slowed down to probably around 75, while I was doing around 65. He dodged to the right to get around the traffic and got back on it. I decided to be a little late just to teach him how slow he was. I got over 2 lanes and got around to the traffic to get around him. He had at least 8 car lengths and 10 mph advantage. Once I hit 4th I was pulling him. Still accelerating at 130, I was on his bumper and closing fast. I had to lift. I was just partial throttling it and sitting on his bumper while he tried to accelerate more. I sat on his bumper(less than a foot off) accelerating slowly with him for a few more seconds just to rub it in, before I finally lifted to take the next exit. He seemed to pull pretty good in 3rd gear, but beyond that it was a dog. That was the hardest I have pushed the car so far and I haven't done something like that for a long time, but it was a lot of fun to beat up on the competition. I am so glad I didn't spend the extra $6K to buy a 330CI.

Re: Had run-in with 330i today
There's the obvious horsepower difference between the two, but what most people don't realize is the aerodynamics. You said that the 330i pulled hard in 3rd, thanks to lower speeds and shorter gearing in the bimmer. But the G35 is far more aerodynamic, so that's a big part of why you were able to pull away quickly at triple-digit speeds. Good kill.

Re: Had run-in with 330i today
First, as an FYI, there is no 235 HP version of a 330Ci. That is only the Performance Package option for the 330i. BMW came out with an option as an upgrade for the sedan only since there is no M3 sedan. The SCCA had a classification change made for this. While the 330Ci's and 330i's run in DS with the G35 sedans, the Performance Option 330i is now in BS with the G35 Coupe. Those of us who get Sports Car magazine have all the info on it.
10 hp isn't much of a difference. A stock 330Ci puts out 200 rwhp on the dyno. The BMWs seem to either have less drivetrain losses or are slightly under-rated. My G35 put down 233 rwhp 2 weeks ago. If the aerodynamics similar, then 10 hp isn't enough to close the gap. I don't know what the drag coeficients or frontal areas are(anyone want to look this up?), but is the G is more aerodynamic then the BMW still wouldn't win with the same power. But this is a theory I would like to put to the test. I will have to keep an eye out for a 330i with M3 lower bodywork and 18" wheels.

Good kill Loren! I love when people think they can smoke us, and you just ride the bumper at part throttle when they're going all out. See ya this Saturday!

Do some more research on this since your informational database is outdated. I am thinking about upgrading to one being that I love changing my cars
I wanna move up in the ranks.
If you think 10hp for BMW "isn't much of a difference" then try upgrading a G with 10 more hp and see if you can get a half second quicker to 60 time. Thats a substantial difference my friend! Now I don't know what to precisely attribute it to, maybe the combination of a few things; less drive-train loss, hp underrating, and/or better gearing but regardless, the 4dr 330i performance package beats the G to 60 by two tenths of a second, 5.6 compared to 5.8 respectively and makes for an interesting high end shootout. Now mate that to a 2dr 330ci performance package, to which the regular 330ci already matches the G35C to 60 and you could come to your own conclusion. We have to still wait for the numbers tho.
Now if I could only come up with the few extra G's I need. Anyone looking to be a little generous

Re: Had run-in with 330i today
no worries about the 330i perf. pkg. bimmers either...beat my friends 3 times in a row and mines an auto coupe with a system in the back.
note: my friend with the 330i says his car weighs in almost exactly as a 330ci also, i havent looked it up myself so he could be wrong.

btw i also beat a mustang gt conv. yesterday...i probably beat both by about a car length or so
but be careful cause if you run into either one that maybe modded a little it might give you a little run for your money

Re: Had run-in with 330i today
Your supposed updated database is incorrect. A stock 330ci will run the 0-60 in the low 6 sec range to high 5's. It will also run the quarter mile in 14.4s@96.5mph. A stock g35 coupe runs 0-60 in the mid to high 5's and covers the quarter in 14.2@100mph. So stock for stock, the g35c will beat it every single time if it is the same driver. Now for the performance package that you think is so godly, which adds 10hp made from a revised ecu map, hotter cams, better exhaust flow, and changes the final drive gearing to a more aggressive 3.07:1 from 2.93:1. The 330i and 330ci have very similar performance numbers, and the BEST numbers I've read for the 330i with performance package is 0-60 in 5.6 and and covers the quarter in 14.3@97mph, which is almost the same as stock. You can expect almost the same from the 330ci with the performance package. Again, the g35c wins.
Oh yea and for your high speed shoot out test, the stock 330i and ci are electronically limited to 128mph and the performance package is AERODYNAMICALLY limited to 152 mph. The g35 coupe on the other hand is ELECTRONICALLY limited to 155mph. Unlimited top speed for the g35c is supposedly in the mid 160's. Needless to say, the g35c wins here too.
Then there are the handling numbers, but I won't go into that since this post is about straight line speed. All of us know that the g35c is the superior handler anyway =)
All in all, when it comes down to it, it is basically a driver's race. However, if you are looking to "upgrade" to a faster car, your driving skills will not change of course, and you'll be stuck with a car that goes slower.

Re: Had run-in with 330i today
BMW is coming out with the Performance Package (ZHP) for the coupe as well in a couple of months. Yes, its already out for the sedan, but it is not limited to it. It will include 18" rims, Alcantra Interior, Short Shifter, M3 Front bumper, M3 steering wheel, bigger cams and a free-er flowing exhaust. I saw the ZHP verision of the coupe at the LA Auto Show and it looked very nice, a lot better than the stock coupe.
BMW is most likely doing this because the e46 model is at the end of its run and they want to get sales up before they move onto the next generation three series.
