Re: Had run-in with 330i today
Well, I don't really want to bash BMW. They set the bar for many years and are the primary reason why our cars are here. The BMWCCA has over 50,000 members(not the hundred of thousands someone said), that are focused in enjoying the capabilities of their cars. They have regular autocrosses, time trial and sport drviving events. They do regular road rallys. You will rarely ever see them at a drag stripe, since that only explores a single aspect of the car.
While an occassional highway run is fun, it isn't putting us as a group in the same league as the BMW guys. I was at a meet on Saturday talking to the 2 people trying to run the DFW G35 club. I have been pushing for more meetings and organizing events like autocrosses, track days, dyno days and rallys with little success. The only feedback I am getting is they did 2 trips to the dragstrip and plan to do more. There are no plans for any type of handling events. I can completely understand why someone would switch cars and still be a member of the BMWCCA. This is where we will have to make it up if we want to truely be BMW beaters.

Ok just to clarify everything. First off there is no way that, that was a BMW 330ci. You would not have beaten it that bad. the quarter mile on a 330ci is 14.5 and a quarter mile on a G35 Sports Coupe is 14.28. Granted the drag coef. is .32 in a 330ci and .28 in a G35 with the aero package and .29 without. Now the times from 60-100 mph for a 330ci is 9.87s and the G35 is 8.88s so it is faster don't get me wrong but the 330ci would not be behind by 10 car lengths. thats just not possible. Oh and unless you buy a M3 a BMW is mainly built for luxury not speed. So beat a M3 and then u will have something to brag about.

Yawn!!! Beating a 330 is so....2002. I cut my teeth on 330ci and 330i in 2002 when I first got my Coupe. I was as curious as they were. Yes, it was close until the top of 3rd gear, then the G walks away. They are geared to do well up until the 1/4 mile, after that, not much going on. Just don't look at 1/4 mile times, look at the ending mph. The Coupe is trapping close to 100 mph. Since we're mag racing, also look at the trap speed and time to 100 mph. You'll see that the G's trap is 100, while the 300i needs 1 second to reach 100 from their usual trap of 96 mph. This means the G is pulling away.

I actually own a G35 and a 2002 BMW 330i - the G35 is faster (and no, I am not talking butt dyno). Significantly faster? No - about a half second (give or take) in the 1/4, but still faster.

I liked it too. Imagine what he could do with another 50 horsepower

For us drag guys, .5 seconds in the 1/4 mile is a lifetime. I'll say .5 is close to 2.5 cars back...enough to see tail lights.
