Re: Lost to a benz SL500
Aznteaser, I just graduated from cal poly last june.
Never really noticed a G but maybe I wasnt payin attention. Yea I get nervous on the hill onramps too. Sometimes I just blaze through the carpool lane if I dont see a cop that way I dont have to stop.

Re: Lost to a benz SL500
SL500 is slower than Gcoupe. Look up the numbers. I've pulled ahead of one before. It's got a decent engine, but it's hauling a fat ***. Juss doesn't cut it.
If indeed it was an SL500, you simply messed up here or there. If it was an SL55, then we stand no chance. =(

Re: Lost to a benz SL500
You're right, a skilled stick driver should be able to beat a SL500 with a G35 6MT.

Re: Lost to a benz SL500
R&T test data:
SL500 v G35 6MT:
0-60 6.1 6.1
0-100 15.0 14.9
1/4m 14.5 14.6
lat g .90 .92
slalom 67.6 67.7
60-0 117' 117'
80-0 205 205
Price 91K 33K
No two cars in Road and Track's test summary have such similar performance in their testing. There is nothing between them. What is left to chance is driver skill, and we all improve with time. As smug as the guy in the SL may have been, you can smile back at him with a much wider grin. Note the last data I listed. You could buy a Mon-Fri G, a Sat G and a Sun G, for the gash to the bank account he has suffered. Or one helluva lot of Pilot Sports and Brembos for track days. ;o)
Cheers,
Derek

Re: Lost to a benz SL500
Hey guys,
Data is for the 6MT, from R&Ts Nov 02 issue. Poorest acceleration results I've seen for our car. C&D shows 5.5 0-60, and Automobile and SCI have similar results. I think that something about R&Ts test was messed up- tires cold, low grip on the track- ??? but theirs are certainly the worst results I've seen. Full tests of the two cars are featured in last year's Sports> cars issue (though not a comparo of course), so I was typing from the same mag. The outstanding performance compared to other world class cars such as the SL was specifically one of the reasons I began my quest for my G in October 02. (actually one of the first Canucks to drive a G- the day after the first cars arrived in the country; hours after the car was PDI'ed, early Nov 02). The SL's numbers are quite surprising, given it's heft. Quite frankly, the 500 seems underkill on displacement for such a beast.
Funny story- I'm in the Canadian Forces (airforce), and work at our military college- similar to West Point, Annapolis, or USAFA. One of our Canadian war heros from WWII (so how old is he?) Air Commodore Len Birchall (stack of medals too big for any man's chest) speaks at the College often, lives in the area, and being a graduate, visits often. His ride? V12 CL600. Cause at 90 some-odd (yes he's still behind the wheel), you need to get there fast, and you need to get there in style ;o)
Cheers,
Derek

Or a SL500 might not even make a dent to his bank account. Quit speculating. :-)
