Dealer Service *Drive Belt Question*

Hey guys, I've had my car for almost exactly 3 years now and it has about 27,500 miles on it. I reported a weird wallowing sound coming from the right side of the car.

When the dealer looked at it, he told me my drive belts were cracked... to that i said to my self WTF? does this sound normal to any of you guys? Of course they don't cover it as well and he quoted me at $215 with an oil change.. so I'm not rushing to get this done. Can you guys please give me feedback ASAP if this sounds credible or not so i can let them know, as the dealer has my car.. Thanks guys!

Why isn't that covered under the warranty? I think the dealer owes you an explanation.

After 3 years, they may well be cracked, even with relatively low miles.

I've been in for something like 5-6 visits over the startup squeaking. Sounds like belts.. I was prepared to pay if it was belts. But it wasnt the belts. You should be able to visually see if they are cracked or worn. If worn abnormally, then thats warranty.. ie, they have to fix the pulley and will replace the belt at no cost. Thats pretty much why I ended up with 2 free sets. I went in knowing my belts were not cracked and not excessively loose. Check that and you can avoid the dealer ever thinking about charging you for the belt.

Really, your belt shouldnt be worn yet. If so, look for a leak. Antifreeze will give your belts premature aging. Again, you go in for the leak.. they fix that and then push for the belt too.

Belts are a wear and tear item......I worked for Nissan up till last week. Belts can be worn for a number of reasons. They are just a rubber compound that is subjected to heat, stress, water, and a million other things. If you take it to a Nissan dealer they can do them for like $120.00. Belts last on average 30000 miles. They can wear before or after that number though. First you will start to see little cracks in the ribs, as those cracks get bigger it causes the belts to slip and that when squealing comes in. There is also a chance of the belts breaking. Keep in mind they call them drive belts, but please do nt confuse them with the timing chain. Hope this helps, and one other thing the whole time I worked for Nissan I NEVER warrantied belts. Warranty just wouldn't buy them. Warranty is for manafaturer defect, and belts are normal wear and tear.

I guess thats why I bought an Infiniti (after dealing with shady Nissan dealers for years). I dont disagree with what youre saying, I'm just saying I got mine free, twice. If you replaced a pulley and the pulley damaged the belt, you'd charge the customer? Or a leak caused a belt to disintegrate? I would probably pay to have a belt replaced while they were in there (cost of belt only), but I'm glad they didnt ask me to pay for it.. (and shop labor).

Out of context of course, what I'm saying is belts wear out....now if it was because of a defect, then no problem. I tried to get everything warrantied, and trust me Nissan is easier then Infiniti. So to aswer your question ...YES IF a pulley was the source of the problem then I would get it warrantied. But 99.998% of the time it's normal wear and tear, just like brakes. But, guess what I have warrantied brakes several times for premature wear. Infiniti is noramlly alot harder to get warranty to buy, I know from expirenece. I am tring to get a new motor right now as a mater of fact. I have failed 4 oil consumption tests, and now I am getting the run around from Infiniti. They are telling me there is a new TSB that will be released and that will take care of my problem. They have said it will be released any time now, and they have been telling me this for over 2 months now. Yes I have taking it all the way to consumer affairs, and yes I get the same answer. Now if it were Nissan I would have already had my motor installed afetr failing 3 tests. Go figure.
