New or used - $55/mo more worth it?
New or used - $55/mo more worth it?
I'm basically looking at a silver base G35 w/ cloth, no options -
I can get a used one with 21,000 miles that is listed for $26,900 for $26K even or I can get the exact same car, but a 2004 that is listed at $30,100 for $28,500-29,000... (also add $800 to either price as I will be replacing the colth seats with custom two-tone leather that matches the light/dark colors of the interior) so I am presented with a problem -
I am trading in my 2000 Monte Carlo SS (88K miles - ouch!) for around $6500 + 1000 addt'l down payment - so basically I'm looking at either a $385/mo payment for the used one or a $440/mo payment for the new one (and I'm kinda crunched for money as I am also looking to buy a new home in the next 3 mo's, but I need a car now!) so basically here is the question: is it worth 55/mo more for the new vehicle when I can get a certified used one that's already broken in for around $3K less? please respond with your justifications behind your answers..thanks alot guys - and either way I'm, looking forward to finally become an official member of the G community! (even though I've frequented this site for around a year!)

Re: New or used - $55/mo more worth it?
I think that in a situation such as that you ask yourself can you afford the $55.00 per month. If you can afford it and comfortably spend that every month then you should get the 2004. I believe that your better off purchasing the brand new car instead of the used one because its brand new and hasn't been abused or mistreated by anyone. There is no hint of anyone else owning the car as you are the first and only owner. I guess however, it really boils down to your finances and whether you can comfortably spend that x-tra $55.00 a month. If you can then go for the 2004 and if you cant then you have no choice but to get the used one. Good luck in whatever you do.

Are you buying or leasing? I assume your buying, becuse if your were leasing you'd be better of getting the newer one. If your buying you have too work out how long you plan too keep the car, bearing in mind that your buying something that has already lost a year of depreciation.
As regards the house purchase, I'm a Real Estate broker in Chicago and that 50 dollars per month barely affects your borrowing power, what kind of mortgage are you looking for cos there's a lot of options available..if you have any questions about the house let me know..I'd be glad too help.

Re: New or used - $55/mo more worth it?
If it was me, I'd get the new one. I think there were a few quirks in the 03's that they worked out in the 04's. Then there is the fact that someone else drove the car for 21000 miles in one year. You have no idea how they broke it in, if they changed the oil, etc.
On the other side of the coin, I have owned several used cars in my time, and they have worked out pretty well.
So, if you can afford it, I would say go for the new one.

I would agree with Dave on this one. There were a few quirks, recalls and TSB's with the 03 model than the 04. If you can swing it, I would go with the 04 model. I doubt the extra $50 will hurt your chances of obtaining a mortgage.
