Possibly a new G35 owner

Hey everyone,

I have been pretty much just sneaking around learning about the G35 for the past year or so. This is basically my dream car and finally all the savings that I saved up and the right age (23) to get a G35 have come! First off, I’m looking into a fully loaded 6spd (except navi) 2004 IP G35 with about 45,000 miles (I’m actually kinda new to driving a manual, but I have done it before). It only had one previous owner and I have asked what the lowest price they would offer would be and they say $24,000. I haven’t mentioned that I will be putting 10k down payment and financing the rest and I also have a 1997 maxima trade in (maybe worth 2k). What can I do to negotiate more to bring the total price to a closer estimate of $23,000. The only thing I see wrong with the car is a nice big spot size of a quarter that the paint has peeled or something hit it that rubbed off the paint near the side skirt of the car. Any hints or suggestions I should do to get the car will help. I am planning to go down there with my dad to pick it up. Again… I’m also afraid of the raise of the insurance if I get this car… have any of you young guys experience any large increase insurance in driving the G?

Thanks again guys!

Are you trying to buy from a dealership? If so, tell them the price you want it for, what youre willing to put down and do, and if they cant do it, walk out and let them chase after you...

Insurance increase? Oh God yes. Clean record, no accidents, $640 approximately every six months. My last car (my faithful 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix which I had since I was 16 and drove it through college) was only about $300 every six months...although when I got it when I was 16 it was $800+ every six months. Although I got my G brand new and I'm pretty sure insurance is cheaper on a used vehicle (from an actuary standpoint...it'd make perfect sense to price a used car cheaper than a brand new one).

Good luck with the purchase.

insurance will go up, and 24k is a tad high.

my only advice would be that if it's your dream car, make sure you know exactly what you want and find one that fits that or one you can make fit that easily. even if you have to wait a little longer and/or spread your search out a bit, it's totally worth it. you have the money and it doesn't sound like you're in a time-crunch. like you, i saved for a year before i was ready to buy, and i can't tell you how many times i almost dropped top $$ on an brand new loaded LS 6mt before a buddy of mine found the LR 04 6mt that went nuts for and bought 2 months ago. (I thank him every day.) the last thing you want to happen is to be driving around in your "dream car" and see a different car on the road one day and say to yourself "man, i should have gotten that instead". regret sucks.

Um, of course insurance will go up, you're kidding right? I pay $300 a month for Allstate full coverage as a college student.. On top of $1xx gas money per month. And I'm assuming you're buying from a dealer because of the trade-in and financing, so negotiate it down a lot. Is $24k the list price? If it is, you should definitely be able to bring down the price to at least $23k. Just point out that it has a lot of miles for an 04 and emphasize on flaws like that paint peeling etc.

I just bought my 2003 5 Spd Auto G35 with 54K miles, fully loaded, navigation system, and sport package (rear spoiler + 18" wheel) for $19,600 ($21,620 out the door.) You definitely could do better with the price. Patient is the key and Craigslist.org is your best bet for getting the best price on the internet.

Thanks guys. I am lowering the price down to 22k if possible. I will let you know what happens!

IP/black interior/6spd/brembo is rare... that's the reason why I wouldn't mind spending an extra bit to get it... but we'll try to lower it down to 22k.

ASKING price is 23395.00... (it has been lowered from the first day of the ad, originally 24489.00)

go in and say you want to pay 23 and that is what you have.

My insurance went down when i bought the car or stayed the same i can't remember. I went from a 96 g20 to the G coupe

I bought mine a year ago( wow i just teared up that the anniversary is right around the corner). When i wanted to get my price lower i did all of the researching i could. I noticed the sticker price and the had it valued to the T for an excellent car. I circled a price below it and said how close can you get to this. They got there and i bought the car.

If you really want to be able to negotiate find out the wholesale value of the car, b/c it is a lot less than you would think and you can always start from there.

When i was buying the car my dad told me not to penny pinch because in the long run was does 1-2k mean?!?! Your car lay-out sounds rare, but try finding a CB/blk interior

Have you budgeted for the maintenance on the car? These aren't the cheapest cars to maintain...especially with the Brembos.

For instance, have the pads and rotors been changed on the car you're looking at? I would guess at 45k they have, but you never know. At a minimum, pads will run you $250 for all four (from one of the sponsors), and rotors anywhere from $125-$420/pc. for the fronts and more for the rears.

Just something to think about - I know a lot of people scrimp and save to make the down payment, but don't think about the other costs that come into play during ownership.
