Is there a really big difference in premium vs regular gas?

$4.13 a gallon for 91 octane this morning in San Jose Ca. I saw it last night at a different station for $4.25.... I wonder what it will top out at during summer driving season.

Couldn't agree more. My experience has been 1-2 mpg less using lower octane gas (88-89, never tried 86-87). That's about a 5-8% reduction in mileage. So, if the spread between midgrade and premium is less than 5-8%, then you're actually spending more buying midgrade than simply buying premium in the first place. That doesn't even consider the detrimental effect on your engine.

Use 91 octane like Nissan recommends.

I'm curious about the impacts of using higher octane than required. I've been filling up 94 octane sunocco since I got the car, because believe it or not, it is CHEAPER. You pay more at the pump, but if you have a points card, you get regular points for 87-91 and you get double points for 94. If you add it up, it works out to 94 costing less in the end, and it's "better gas" My concern is, is it possible that I'm not getting complete combustion due to the higher combustion temp requirement for the 94? I am fairly liberal with my gas pedal on occasion, but I normally shift at 3200rpm, and maybe take it up to 4500 if I'm in the mood. The car does get redlined from time to time, but definitely not often.

octane higher than recommended will not net you any increase in hp or mileage since the car isn't tuned for this higher octane. In theory it will actually net lower hp/mileage since it has less energy/gallon compared to 91

Bump.

Will 91 octane over 93 make a huge difference?


If i use 91 for now, i could always put in 93 later on without any issues, correct?

Reason i ask... I have no problem with buying premium, it's just the fact that i live in Chicago, and gas prices here are a joke, but i'll do whatever it takes to have my G happy


Edit: Actually, i just looked around at gas prices. The difference is only about 15 cents. I thought it was worse.
