Raspy Sound with Stock Exhaust???

I bought a used 2003 G35C 6MT with 35,000miles. I took it to a Nissan dealer before I bought it to have them give it a "onceover." He mentioned that he thought it had an aftermarket exhaust on it, because it sounded louder than stock.

Eventually I crawled under the car and the exhaust says Nissan on it, and looks stock, so I'm pretty sure its a stock exhaust.

At about 3K RPMS it gets really raspy and it really bothers me. I hate that raspy sound. I have owned the same car when it first came out in 2003 and my current exhaust is def louder and way more raspy than my previous G35 Coupe. If I have a stock exhaust, what would cause that raspyness? What can I look for?

Thanks.

You could either have a hole in the pipings or muffler, or the previous owner could have put test pipes on it. Do you notice

any bad smell? If you don't then it's probably just a hole somewhere.

You could possibly have test pipes? Test pipes are without a doubt raspy, and they increase the sound by quite the bit.

agreed with chilibowl. Test pipes are probably what is causing that raspy sound.

thanks guys. I've gotten under the car to look at everything and honestly I'm lost. Nothing really looks like it was replaced or anything but then again if test pipes have been on there for 25,000 miles then I probably couldnt tell anyways???

I think I may take it to a shop and see what they can tell me, maybe find a hole or something.

Thanks for all your input though.

get under the car, look for any exhaust piece that doesnt have Nissan stamped on it. Check all the way up to where they go up into the engine, those last small foot and a half long pipes or sqaurish pipes are either stock cats or test pipes. If they have a different name....ding ding ding ding.
