There aren't any specific bearings on our cars that are prone to wearing out that I'm aware of.

The pilot and throwout bearings on the clutch aren't a particular problem, the tranny doesn't usually give out as a result of a bearing failure, and our wheel bearings are stout.

Prepare to spend consistent money on tires mostly, and if you get the Brembo 6MT Coupe then Brakes will wear fast and cost a decent amount to replace... particularly if you have someone else do the work. Batteries and Power Windows are also an issue with these cars, and many people have a rear axel clicking problem which is covered by a TSB if your car is still under warranty when you get it.

If you got the $ and a safe place to park, then fine I guess. But if you have to park on the street or frat row, it's going to get tortured.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and get something easy and worry free until you graduate (like a Civic).
Nah, even if you are a part-time job/student you can afford it. My friend just bought a Z at 19 and he goes to school too, and has a part-time job. He is making every payment w/o any help from his parents.

I'm 19 and a sophomore in college, I have an '04 coupe. It's at college with me and I park it in a garage for 250/semester. I got it in May and so far it's needed brakes and a new tire (I got a flat), tire was $300 and brake job was $400. I don't regret getting it and I love having a G to drive around down here.

I'm 18 and a freshman in college and I just bought a 2006 coupe with sport package. So far so good. Just a lot of road noise but it doesn't bother me much. I recommend getting the car.

You young people are very lucky you can get this car. I had to wait till I owned a bunch a cars and put my kid through college. I know this is my toy. I work from home and put on about 2 thousand miles since August.

What does that mean? I'm not out pouring money in the gas tank and burning through tires. The G is not exactly fuel friendly.

I love my car, it's garaged with about umpteen coats of wax and it sparkles like a show room car. I enjoy driving it and playing with it.

I would never own this as my one and only daily driver, it's just not practical to go to Home Depot and haul boards and bags of fertilizer. It's not practical to pick up people and go out unless it's just one person.

That said, I still love this car and treat it like a lap dog that likes fancy food.

Anyways, to my question, i am currently in the process of getting an 03 g35 coupe with all the works, navi, black leather, bose, moonroof, spoiler, pretty much everything at only 46,000 miles. It is an automatic as i dont want to deal with the hassle of a manual. Now my question is, are these cars what they are cracked up to be? In every post i see about them, there are always little things that need to be fixed on the car, and i am wondering for a college student (Im 19) is it a car that will consistently need to be repaired? The one i am getting does not have any warranty left on it, and i dont want to always have to spend my money on finicky repairs such as the window motors, fixing the rattles, gas tank issue....What does everyone else have to say, and sorry for the long read but i want to make sure i know what i am getting myself into before this happens as i plan on keeping the car for the next 4 or 5 years.

I love my G, but no it's NOT everything everyone cracks it up to be. Depending on how your previous owner took care of it...you might have a lot of expensive repairs coming your way pretty quickly with that number of miles.

I have a job and am paying for it myself. I am definitely lucky to have this car and i absolutely love it. But I'm just saying that not all kids get they're cars bought for them by their parents. The majority of us work for our cars. I think it is a good car for daily driving also as long as you don't need to haul people around.

alot of good usefull information in this thread. As this car would be my daily driver and the situation of seating wouldnt be an issue for me as all my friends seem to have cars. I would be working and paying for this car myself and working part time getting about $500 after taxes every two weeks, i just want to make sure its plausible for me to own and take care of this car. Anyone else with more to say, then just post it

$500 every 2 weeks? Thats barely enough for car payments and insurance. Not counting other bills that you have, cost of food, gas, phone bills etc etc..

Are you purchasing it from a dealer or private party? How much do u currently have saved up?

I really doubt you can make it at $500 every two weeks. Unless you don't have any other bills to pay.

How much is the G ur looking at?

I agree w/ Doctor G:I do not know your financial situation but I know for me my car has been a little costy to get repairs and maintain the up keep and sometimes things are needed when not expected. Things are going to be rather tight for you...something to think about. I don't condone getting credit cards when money is tight, but that seems to be the only saving factor for you in case of emergency....unless mom and dad can help out and you have a good amount saved up already.

dude....$500 every two weeks isnt going to cut it. I would say $500 a week, then that'd be better. I'm looking for a G right now, and I worked out all the possible payments i can afford on it when i have rent, utilities, personal bills and money to buy all the food to fuel my body and workouts.

your insurance (in your name, plus your 19) would be about $250-400
Car payments (depends on your down payment) would be about $320-$500

Thats basically both pay checks right there, you'll need money for gas, fixing problems and to take out the girls you attract with the car.

General rule of thumb is the car related payments should be less than 20% of net income. Sounds like a $150 car with $50 insurance payment per month sounds like your target range.

I know I'm being conservative but I've gone through paying for my own college and grad school... Save your money because some day, you may regret not being a little financially conservative in your early years.

i am living at home right now, and my parents are not making me pay for rent or anything like that, just for my car and my car isurance. My dad would be the co-signer on the car so i could get a better rate through his insurance. I have about 5 grand saved up now, and after i sell my car i would have another 6 grand once the car is sold. The G i am looking at is going to be around $18000. Another thing, my step mom works for 21st century auto insurance, so i also get a deal from that. I guess you can kind of say i am lucky to be in the spot where i am, although i do plan on moving out in about 2 years.
