damn service engine soon light

i am driving my car friday evening, and my service engine soon light comes on. then a message on my navigation said the same and it had an icon for more details. i click on the icon and read all the info and it said check the fuel filler cap. so i pull over take the fuel filler cap off and retighten it. well the details said in the nav system that after a few trips the service engine soon light will shut off, well 2 days and a half a tank later the light is still on. has anyone else had this happen to them? if so how did you get that damn light to shut off? if it does not shut off by the time i get to work i feel i have to bring it to the dealer.

You can try disconnecting the battery overnight.

Re: damn service engine soon light

my coupe has 3200 mi and the lite came on too. The first time I took it in, the dealer said Infiniti techline told them to replace some kinda vacuum canister as a possible fix. I had it back for a week but the lite came on again. The dealer had it all hooked up and said the emissions system is holding pressure, so there are no emiss leaks according to his tests, so right now, it's still at the dealer while he confers with the techline to see what else they can do. Hope I get it back today. I miss driving my coupe!

picking my car back up tonite. dealer says they think its a chip bug. says infiniti is writing software patch to keep car from generating the erroneous check engine lite when nothing is wrong. they will make the patch to my car when it is release in a couple of weeks.

Hey antrock, my tech guy said if there is no problem with the system, it may take a lot of on-off cycles (or trips) to reset the MIL. If I were you I'd take it to the dealer and get him to reset the light. Hopefully it won't come back on. If it does then there is an issue somewhere in the system., and he should be able to download a code.
That's news that the MIL will prompt a display on the Navi.I like that. Thanks for letting us know.
Also let us know the outcome of the MIL.

it said a lot and it also had an option to show you to the closest infiniti dealer. it also said if the service engine soon light blinks it is a miss fire, it was pretty detailed at least 8 pages of info.

caribblue,
thanks for the info. i have one more question, do you know if it was your fuel cap that caused the light to come on? i am pretty sure that is the reason why mine came on because i refueled that morning before the light came on.

Re: damn service engine soon light

nope, I always make sure to spin my fuel cap 3 or 4 times. Besides, when the dealer had it, he pressurized the emiss system and it was holding pressure, so no leaks anywhere, including from fuel cap. They reset the light and it's off for right now, but if it comes back on, I'll just have to wait on the software fix from Infiniti. Tech said they checked the car thoroughly and nothing wrong with it.

You need to fill the tank to full and it may take a couple of tanks to correct it it took two tanks of gas for me. Make sure you twist the filler cap for a few clicks past when it starts to click as you tighten. This has happened only once with me.
