Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

I agree with XIMER on the stfu part. People need to stop judging AT vs MT on his own preference. What is the definition of driving? Elussive is using his own definition on driving to judge the whole AT vs MT issue. He thinks driving should have full attention and full control of the vehicle, but that is just his definition of driving. Some other people think driving should be a relaxing experience after work and they shouldn't have to worry about shifting and all that when driving, and they like it that way, that's their definition of driving. What make your definition of "drive" a true statement to others. it's not! Driving is not Racing, racing is about full focus and attention on the track, thinking about shifting, turning at the same time, but that is not driving, that's racing. Driving should be a daily basis thing that some people preferred not to worry about all the shifting and stuff (and, this is my definition of driving). Either way, don't use your personal bias to judge other ppl and come up with some false statement like "MT is more enjoyable" (there are many ppl enjoy driving without worrying about shifting than you think), or if you wanna "drive", you gotta get the MT. All these kind of "personal preference" and use it to judge other ppl's thought is just silly. (As everyone has their own definition of what driving should be) Get a life and stop the flame, just stop judging each other's choice, by all mean we all have a decent G, and I'm getting tired of this AT vs MT war that come up on the forum once awhile.

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

Ummm. Folks, I didn't want to start anything with this thread that questioned anyone's commitment to spirited driving enjoyment. Just curious about performance from a more statisical standpoint. Haven't heard much about top speed differences, if any, between the transmission choices. I can tell you that I have owned several high performance sports cars (MT all) and find that the G delivers quite a satisfying performance experience. You don't buy either (AT/MT) G35 for cutting edge acceleration and handling, but rather the overall balance of performance and luxury in a captivating package. Hell, the WRX STI goes like stink, but looks like hell. Anyone that bought a G35 could have had the Subaru with change left over. 35K can buy you some good late model performance cars like a used Z06, or even a 993 Porsche.

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

I don't feel any difference between MT and AT. My friend own AT and I own MT, and I droved my friend's AT and I didn't notice the difference. I actually liked AT because I was able to have my left foot and right hand do other things I couldn't done with my MT coupe. Still I love my MT. Also I have a question. I read RoadandTrack and saw the 0-60, and for G35coupe it said 6.1sec. I thought the G was able to pull around 5.8 or little faster....

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

hey man.....seriously both AT/MT are good you should know that without asking....

hey dragoncoupe....where you from.....im from chicago....if i bought a 6MT i would have had to buy a new set of winter rims right after i had bought the car (which i could not afford), cuz it was in the middle of winter....and also since i was planning to buy 19" wheels.....i would have had to sell the stock 18's, which is kind of a pain in the ***.....
you think your some kind of racer by the things you say.....
"if anyone really wanted a 6MT they would have got one" can you plz stfu... you dont know everybody's situation, and you say that.....there was a guy who posted that he bought a AT becuz his fiance had to drive it also.....and there are millions of other reasons. i love manuals also.....ur not the only who enjoys driving stick...racer boy

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

The only thing worse than a 6MT vs AT thread is a Sedan vs Coupe thread, and the only thing worse than that is a G35 vs 350Z thread :P

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

Interestingly enough I was raised on manual transmissions in the UK. Every car I ever drove/owned was a manual. Back to the AT/MT debate..Ximer has a very good point, it's personal preference & personal need. I see zero difference in performance in either car. It's great too bash somebody who doesn't have what you have, maybe that person didn't want it? I drive a 5AT sedan, I love it..I could have gotten a 6MT, hell I could have gotten a 5 series BMW..I bought the 5AT BECAUSE I WANTED TO. I love my car, it's the business, but by the same token I certainly wouldn't put somone down because they choose differently.

Cheers,

Andrew

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

OK, im gonna be the FIRST to actually answer the question

my 5AT at the 1/8th mile track
9.578 @ 75.75mph
9.581 @ 76.10mph
that was the first time i had ever raced and i could make marginal improvements but again its a 5AT so 9.5 flat may be the best of my bone stock 5AT, but the Ztube & Popcharger is in route

now u 6MT owners that think you can have gotten good times and even the ones that know u havent post ur times so we can see how much difference it is and the rarity of drivers that could drive a 6MT faster than the 5AT...

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

I agree that MT owners shouldn't automatically (haha) think ppl who drive AT's are lazy, talk on cell phones, eat food while driving, etc. The reason my parents chose the AT was b/c my mom doesn't know how to drive stick. My dad and I do, but b/c of her, we're stuck with AT. But it's still a lot of fun, my dad and I always drive it in MM mode, while she drives it like a conventional automatic. I guarantee that 99% of those who have bought their G35's with a stick didn't even question which transmission to go with. When you want a MT, you want it because you love it. If you have to ask ppl on these forums whom you don't even know, I don't think your in it for the right reason. Although my parent's G35C is auto, it's still a blast to drive and all I can think about is that huge smile on my face. (It also doesn't hurt that the car is also the loudest thing I've ever heard!) Pro 1 Exhaust, thanks Moog.

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

oh and I have seen or heard first hand about 9runs from 4 different 6MT drivers (all of which come to this forum) and the best run was in the 9.7s at 1/8th mile.
All four were first time racers which makes it virtually impossible to get a good time IMO
Im sure we will hit the track again and Im anxious to see how they improve and to get a true stat of what the 6mt can do first hand.

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

Booger, yeah i agree, somehow some MT drivers always like to start the flame, and say stuff in their own bias to make them superior than the AT drivers. This reminds me of all the BMW 3-series drivers like to come to the G forum and start talking [censored] about G and how their 325CI or 330I is better, well, they do it for the same reason i guess. Either way, the AT vs MT war should be finished a long time ago.

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

LOL. XIMER, chill out buddy. I'm from sunny Orange County, Southern Cali. I was trying to mend the situation, but apparently you got the wrong point of view here. I do not know your situation, nor do you know mine. So I will refrain from any sort of judgement, however I will attempt to restate my point of view. Ellusive's view of the MT gearbox is a tad aggressive. True. I just wanted to say that what he really means is some people only want to row through the gears, and others want to let a computer do it for them. All I was trying to say was, we do not need to start another MT vs AT war; that the people who own MT know why they own them. Same goes for the AT owners. Who has more fun driving? I'll let you be the judge.

I'll take 'racer boy' as a compliment, false as it may be. I can actually only drive my 6MT adequately. I'm sure most AT people can walk me. Does this bother me? No. I know why I wanted the MT. Let's stop this nonsense.

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

This thread is quite tame in comparison to some of the others. My personal experience has been that it is a drivers race. I have beaten MT drivers, but I believe that it is because they couldn't drive the car properly. The most accurate result came when I was up against an MT driver and we both had the "yo-yo affect going... I would pull then he would pull then I would pull then he would pull (only by a few feet each time) Each time off the line was where the AT pulled first against the MT @ 2500 to 3000 RPM. The AT improves in performance more dramatically after break in which could be the reason for such a gap in results by C&D and M.T. The 6MT is a blast to drive, so is the AT (I would give the 6Mt an edge on the fun factor) The feel was not different however at full thottle. At part throttle the 6mt feels more spirited- like it is just about to break loose if you just hit the pedal. Like a stallion ready to go. The AT however is less nerve racking because of its ease of launch compared to the 6MT. It's all about personal choice. Drive both and decide for yourself.
