Info on the 6MT, Tranny and Clutch
I notice another thread discussing the clutch on the 6MT so I figured I would post my recent experience:
I have been driving MT my whole life. Much of that was spent in very modded cars going very fast. Including a twin turbo 300ZX and a 550rwhp Mustang.
When I bought my G I kept having problems with shifting (I did post months ago asking about my problems on here).
The basic description is that I had trouble shifting when flooring it, needing to shift gears real fast. I would accidently hit 2nd gear when trying to shift into 4th, etc. This is a big problem because your clutch foot still dumps the clutch...say hello to the rev-limiter.
Well, I thought it was the car but when I shifted normal there was no problem. Well, it got worse. So I started reading about transmissions and it seemed that the syncros were f'ed up.
So, during my 6 month service ( at 4400 miles), I told Infiniti to look at it. That asked me to describe it, which I did just like I typed here... they said "Yeah, there are problems with the syncros. We are going to order you a new transmission."
That was easy. I expected the normal run-a-round that implied I didn't know what I was talking about.
So I took the car in, they had it two days and I now have a new tranny... and clutch pedal assembly! The clutch pedal assembly has been redesigned to engage differently so the syncros are not damaged. That is what I was told, not really sure how it all works.
So, to everyone with a 6MT, please remember this. It might not just be your driving if there are issues.
Oh, and normally I would have been happy with the service until I found a Churches Fried Chicken Ketchup package under my seat. It wasn't mine, and no one else drives my car. These a$$holes must have taken my car to lunch.
Hope this helps someone. Sorry so long.

Re: Info on the 6MT, Tranny and Clutch
HI:
Thanks for the info! Thats sucks that they took your car to a drive through. Probably did it on a test drive to make sure the new tranny install went right. But slovenlyness is what it is.
How are your speed shifts going now? Have you seen any improvement? That 2nd vs 4th has been a problem for me too.

Did the dealer say if the assembly was going to be recalled due to the malfunction?

Re: Info on the 6MT, Tranny and Clutch
Not sure of the build date. Is that on the driver door info plate?
There was no mention of a recall. Seemed to me like one of those "if they bug you, fix it" type of things. They wouldn't have went through the trouble of designing a new clutch pedal assembly if it wasn't a real problem.
The new tranny works awesome. Totally different in how it shifts. A car should "direct" the shifter into the proper gear. Well, sort of. With the failed synchros, it was doing the opposite.
As for them driving my car for lunch... just makes me nervous... I personally don't do the drive through just so I can't bang my wheels. I doubt they car.

Re: Info on the 6MT, Tranny and Clutch
I've also been wondering if there is anything wrong with my synchros... basically I can't downshift into 1st without double clutching to match the revs.
it won't let me go into 1st at all when I just try to rev match with the clutch down. is that normal? this happens even if I am just rolling or almost stopped at a stop sign...

Re: Info on the 6MT, Tranny and Clutch
If you're rolling pretty slow, you should be able to downshift into 1st, it just takes more effort than if you were at a full stop. If you're going like 20mph and you wanna put it in 1st, you definitely have to rev-match in Neutral, then put it in 1st. Unfortunately, double-clutching is a thing of the past EXCEPT for those who like to downshift to 1st while moving.

orljmh, how are you shifting when driving aggressively? Even when you shift at redline, try to avoid "slamming" the shift **** into gear. Just be gentle and do a quick, fluid movement...it works much better than sort ramming it quickly...that's when the shift **** goes into the wrong gear, and it is something I have read about and learned with practice in the G.

Re: Info on the 6MT, Tranny and Clutch
I remember MT was saying how our cars had "very undefined shifting gates." I gotta say, they need to drive a Z06 right before driving our cars. I complaied a little as to the short nature of our cars, but lemme just tell you, when I was at Kerbeck chevy, the Commerative Z06 they let me into....I could see my self slamming 2nd at the top of 3rd gear with absolutley no idea I wasn't in fourth. Its all about finesse with our cars, I find powering into the gate only truly works for 2nd gear. Hell, I missed 3rd last night trying to put force behind my shift, wound up hitting the gate between 3rd and 5th and was sent to neutral. Glad no one was around to hear that one. =)

Re: Info on the 6MT, Tranny and Clutch
MrElussive,
I understand what you are saying and I agree. I was always doing what you say...just real fast.
Like I mentioned in the first post...there REALLY was something wrong with the tranny... which is why they replaced it.
Think about it like this...
You go to shift from 3rd to 4th, as your hand comes down the tranny "knocks" the shifter into second. The guy at Infiniti said it had something to do with how the synchro for second did not release when you went into 3rd gear. This causes the 2nd gear to be match with 3rd at all times. So when you shift into 4th, you either wind up in 2nd, or you have to double clutch 4th... at which time 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears are spinning at the same speed.
When I mentioned that "I thought it was me" he said "Well, eventually it would have gotten worse and we would be changing the transmission then".
I hope this clarifies a bit that it wasn't just how I was shifting. I am passing this info along so maybe others who might not have the knowledge of trasmissions or might be new to driving a stick will understand that something may be wrong before their 4 year warrenty is up.

Re: Info on the 6MT, Tranny and Clutch
orljmh, please don't misunderstand me. I don't doubt for a second that your transmission was all screwed up. Also, I am really glad you got it fixed and that all is well. I just wanted to chime in with some additional shifting tips since you brought up this interesting topic. I just wanted to state how even these shifting errors can occur without fault of the transmission (even though this was not the case for you initially, it was the fault of the transmission)...it happens to the best of us, and has happened to me plenty of times! =)

I didn't mean to come across agressively. I didn't take offense to your post.
I was just trying to be extra clear so everyone understood what happen in my experience.
I have missed millions of times in my life. Everyone does. But I didn't want to confuse the apparent problem that Infiniti is aware of and seem to not be making a recall on it.
