How to shift during a highway race?

Ok let's say I'm driving at around 60mph in 5th gear on the interstate and a car comes up and signals to race. How would I shift to get the best top end out of the car? I have an auto and I've always driven in D mode since I really suck at the manual mode.

Leave it in 5th and keep on rolling, safer that way.

NO, do not keep it in 5th lol, the car has NO POWER!!! I alwasy drop to 3rd or if no ones around maybe even second to get a power jump and a quick split second shift. Practice cause its hard, I use to bounce off the rev limiter but now its like uhmmm routine haha, also cause I use to drive a stick :/ and wish I still had it but couldnt wait for it in this car and it came out two weeks after ahh... Breather, sorry for thr run on sentence but always drop to third then the momentum gains from there. iLLG

Double Shift... You have to be quick though...
Or you you don't feel you're quick enough, you can slap it into D then floor it. The car will go to 3rd, then you can go back to MM mode to control the upshifts.

But don't floor it before slapping it into D. If you do that it will take longer for the car to recognize that it is in D mode resulting in a delayed downshift.

Re: How to shift during a highway race?

plus you have to let it go off the gas pedal(don't press any more than 1/4 throttle) in order to double downshift... and if you are at 60mph and put it in 3rd... 5AT 2nd gear tops at 60mph(i tried to downshift to 2nd while i was exactly at 60 but tranny won't let me downshift)

Drop it like it's hot into 3rd by holding it in the downshift as soon as you move the shifter from D to M. You gotta hold it there because when going from D to M, the car will make sure that it won't break the rev limiter by automatically putting it in 5th gear and that isn't sweet at all. It the rpms will rise like a bat outta hell so be ready to shift back up in about 2-3 seconds. But it will give you a huge jump. That's what I do and it works like a charm.
