shifting out of 1st gear

i've always shifted out of 1st gear @ 4k+ rpm into 2nd gear, or when i'm driving moderately i shift @ 2k rpm.
i've been trying to shift @ 3k rpm nowadays but i can't seem to shift smoothly.
does this make sense or is it just my driving?
only way i can shift smooth at 3k rpm is when i feather in the 2nd gear.

You just have to practice. I haven't had a problem.

Re: shifting out of 1st gear

I sort of have the opposite problem, any time I shift over 4K from first to second gear it sounds and feels like the clutch is burning up when I depress the clutch pedal - this is regardless of how long I wait to depress the clutch pedal to the floor after taking my foot off the accelerator.

I used to have the same problem. It's your driving. More practice and your figure it out.

Re: shifting out of 1st gear

from time to time, I still get that Click when shifting to second @ 3K. When I first got the car though, I had the same problem. Our 1-2 shift is a bit tricky if your just riding on it normal.

Re: shifting out of 1st gear

YES, i was just going to say the same thing.
my car shifts fine at any other gear, but when 1 -> 2
i hear that little click time to time. i seem to shift better when i push the car but driving it normally, is not so smooth.
lately i've been lazy and i just drive my car as long as it goes. i don't care too much about jerking and smoothness except for when i want to push the car a bit. that's always fun.

this is a newbie question for you...
when you guys shift gear to gear, do you let the clutch up lightly or just bring it up in one quick motion. i tried both and i can seem to shift fine both ways, just a matter of how much gas i use.
just looking for some input on fellow G drivers

Re: shifting out of 1st gear

Remembered I left something out. My father told me when I was learning to drive it the best thing to do is over gas first. In other words, the second before your going to shift, push the pedal in a little bit more, then shift. This will hold your RPMS above 3K for a brief second and give you that extra bit of a second to get the clutch in for 2nd gear. I found that blipping the gas before the 1-2 shift smoothed out my shifting very quickly. As far as releasing the clutch, I do it differently depending on situation. Relaxed driving, Ill use the clutch in one complete, same speed, fluid motion, right to the catch point and then briefly stall on the catch point with a nice, slow release, as any manual driver will tell you, that is the smoothest way you can drive a stick. For more spirited driving, I don't use the entire length of the clutch, I just engage it and then rock it back into gear using a nice slow release off the clutch. For fast driving, its all timing, either you can do it or you cant, however, when I'm really on it, Ill slam the clutch it, pop it right to the catch point then engage it. In other words, its all a matter of knowing your clutch and right where it catches. When I say "slow" I mean in comparisson to just poping the clutch out...because my shifting is far from what I'd call slow, just needed to use the word for effect. Hope that helps.

Re: shifting out of 1st gear

thanks ex250, from what i'm reading i'll try that little blip of the throttle. as for everything else i seem to be getting accustomed to my MT just fine since i drive it similar to the way you do. maybe just not as smoothly.
