When buying a used car…
I’ve heard it’s a smart thing to get it inspected by an independent party. I found this company who does all the inspections for eBay auctions http://sgs-ebay.sgsauto.com/Index_Car.htm. But all they do is just look around the car and test drive it. Or should I be taking it to an Infiniti dealership to have a trained mechanic run a detailed diagnostics? Let me know what you guys did when you bought your cars. And lastly, how do I get the car dealer to agree to let me take the car to another place to get it checked out??
Thanks for your help!

personally i only buy used cars from a reputable used car dealer that i trust 100%. that would be CarMax for me...since my wife has worked there for over 6 years and we've bought 5 cars from them.
i feel your pain though. i'd be super paranoid about buying from some random dealership. i'm just that an@l i guess.
the seller (whether private or dealer) should be fine with letting you take it for an hour or so to get something else to "inspect" it. just make sure you get everything scheduled ahead of time.
but unless you know a mechanic personally, i wouldn't expect much from competitive dealerships mechanic "inspection". i've asked the "hey, i don't want to buy your car but here's this car from a competitors lot that i'd like you to look at and make sure it's ok for me to buy" question to a dealer service department before - they looked at me like i was out of my freaking mind.
i get your point, just not sure it would accomplish much for you. make sure you get a warranty...period.

Any reputable used car dealer would be fine with you taking it to have an independent inspection. And you don't have to tell the inspecting dealer that it's from another dealership. I've asked multiple used car dealers to take cars to other dealerships for inspection, and none have given me a hard time. If they do, stay away.
And, yes, I would take it to Infiniti for a detailed inspection as they'll know the trouble spots to watch for.
