rattling noise????

06 MT coupe

i have this rattling noise if there is complete silence with my windows rolled down and im driving next to a high wall or in a tunnel. if im driving in the open not next to anything such as a wall i dont hear anything. i only hear it if i intend to look for the sound if you know what i mean other than that i dont hear anything. it sounds like 2 pieces of sheet metal banging on each other or spare change in your pocket. it sounds like its coming from the front of the car. i searched and read a lot about noises and rattles and was wondering if this is one of the normal ones.

Our cars can be a symphony of etraneous rattles.

I found out today what was rattling on my G. I had the exact same sound triggering off and on depending on range of rpms. There is some sort of black sheet panel just in front of the muffler ("front" meaning towards the engine if laying under the car at back bumper area). It seems to only be held by two small bolts. I was able to identify it as the problem by parking inside the garage to enclose the sound waves emitting from the car while engine idling and reving and idling again to catch sound at different rpm's. You might try that to duplicate driving through the tunnel and/or next to wall scene where sound bounces or is enclosed enough for you to hear it.

Anyways, though I didn't get to fixin' the problem just yet since I don't have what I think I want to get, I will attempt to tackle that tomorrow. I plan on heading out to HomeDepot and picking up some washers to place in between the bolts and sheet in effort to hopefully stop the vibration sound by slightly separating the two touching points of metal (metal sheet & muffler) that bang and vibrate at certain rpms. If that doesn't help, then I'll pry into the adjoining gaps some sort of rubber spacers so that metal to metal isn't touching and creating that metal vibrating/rattling sound.

Well I found that to be my vibration gremlin. Hopefully you guys end up having the same gremlin so that identifying as well as fixing it can be a breeze.

Hope I was of help. Good luck!!!

there are other threads discussing this. if your g is under warranty, the dealer should fix it for free.

I hear rattle mostly when it's cold outside. Recently, my passenger door/window started rattling when I shut the door. I was pretty sure that the glass was loose and was going to to follow one of those DIY take off door panel to check it out. I put my car in garage overnight and in the morning this rattling/banging completely dissapeared. Unfortunately I can't keep my car in garage all the time. Anyone else has this problem in cold weather ?
