6MT + A/C On....
Hey,
So once every few days when it's actually been nice and hot here in NJ, I bring my windows up and use the A/C (I just set climate control to 70 degrees on both sides and let it work). Whenever the A/C is working pretty hard, I've noticed that the revs drop really fast when I wanna upshift or downshift, which has made shifting smoothly more difficult. Any other 6MT owners notice this? Does it bother anyone?? I always have a hard a time adjusting my driving style when my A/C is on and working hard, compared to it being off. But I kinda like the 1-2 shift with A/C on. When driving with A/C off, I find that the 1-2 shift takes forever....I accelerate, push the clutch in, wait for the revs to drop, then let the clutch out. But when A/C is on, I gotta let the clutch out sooner and there is no more annoying wait when shifting from 1-2, it's really cool. I forgot the true point of this post so I'll just stop talking and post now.

Why let the revs drop from the 1-2 shift in the first place? No fun that way.

In most cars (and I assume the G35 is no different) the air conditioner's compressor, which runs off the fan belt, uses a clutch to engage/disengage it as needed to maintain cabin temperature as dictated by the interior's thermostat. When it's engaged, it puts a significant "parasitic" load on the engine. It would tend to drop RPMs more quickly in a throttle-off situation because of this. While you may like that aspect of it, the bad news is it's robbing the engine of power. If you want maximum power, kill the A/C before you floor it.

Yeah, I know A/C taxes horsepower and I can feel it too. The car feels a bit sluggish with A/C on. I like the ability to do a quicker 1-2 shift, but overall A/C makes for a more difficult overall drive.
afr0puff, what do you mean by that? How is there any other way to shift 1-2 smoothly? I accelerate in first to like 3K rpm, and then I push the clutch in and shift to 2nd, but I have to wait for the rpm's to drop a bit before I let the clutch back out. Otherwise, the rpm's are too high and the car will do like a little jump forward, which is not smooth at all.

Must be something to do with economics. =P
I think I figured out what afropuff was saying. With A/C off, if I shift from 1st to 2nd and just let the clutch out kinda quick without really waiting for the revs to drop, the shift comes out smoothly if you time it right...I'm still playing around with this technique though, so don't quote me on it.

Re: 6MT + A/C On....
doesnt the a/c automatically switch off when the gas pedal is floored? btw, i'm in NY, so i know about tha damned hot weather, i've been running nothing less than A/C lately, dont mean to jack a thread, but what mpg have u guys been experiencing? i've dropped from 20 mpg to 17.5 mpg under the same driving manners. and filling up in jersey (20 cents cheaper than in NY), i spent $38 and my tank wasnt even empty! my yearly raise wont even cover the rise in cost of gasonline =(

A/C does switch off when you floor it. I Haven't been using my A/C all that much, even in this heat. If I get inside my car and it's hot, I'll run the A/C for a few minutes, but as soon as it gets cooler inside, I just turn off the A/C and lower my windows. I love driving with the windows down and the A/C makes the car feel so sluggish. I get exactly 19mpg (~19-19.5mpg) lately.

I'm the same way. I get in my car let the A/C run for a few mins to cool down. Then i drop the 2 front windows while i'm cruising around town. You gotta have a/c on the highway. But I never get tired of hearing my Injen CAI at WOT. And the look on people's faces as you go by WOT when their windows are down is PRICELESS.

Basically I just feel as if the cars is a hella've alot laggier with the AC on, feels as if I'm pulling on another 500lbs of weight. Cars alot slower, but then again its the same with alotta cars...just thought that with a V6 you wouldn't feel as much lag as compared to a 4 cylinder (RSX) which I've used to drive
