How NOT to treat your Skyline GT-R
Watch this until the end, the in-car shot is the best but you need speakers for this one.

What's with that clunking noise whenever he shifts?

Re: How NOT to treat your Skyline GT-R
Those synro's are so shot. With that kind of driving technique I wouldn't be surprised if the clutch is shot too. I had an old Dodge Daytona 2.2 Turbo 5M that had the clutch go and I couldn't shift into reverse because of it.
This dude really took it literally when someone told him to "drive it like you stole it"

Re: How NOT to treat your Skyline GT-R
90% of the video was auto abuse......there is nothing to "wonder" about why the car sounds like sh*t every time he shifts. If you abuse the car, the clutch/tranny wear down much faster...and it seems like he ain't shifting properly. Somebody should show that dude how to drive a manual tranny.

Re: How NOT to treat your Skyline GT-R
Just an observation...thats an R32 skyline and it wasnt until the R34 that the GT-R's gained 6 speeds. That rules out the tranny being stock. That said, I have seen supras that sound like that while shifting from outside the car, but the only ones like this I saw were out at a shop near my parents house in az. Both had oodles of hp under the hood, so maybe, thats just what that tranny sounds like, or maybe it just doesnt have synchros

Re: How NOT to treat your Skyline GT-R
hey guys,
There's nothing wrong with his transmission and there was nothing wrong with how he shifted or drove that car. That sound is normal for that type of tranny.
It's called a dogbox transmission.
No synchros, straight-cut gears. That's why it sounds like that.
(a conventional tranny has helical cut gears with synchros, for ease of driving and quietness)
You rarely see dogboxes on the street, but you'll see them on the dragstrip where trannies need to handle things like 800 ft-lbs of torque.
I know it probably looked like abuse, but he was just going through the normal drag prep and staging sequence before launching. He set his line-lock and did a proper burnout to smoke the rears for maximum grip, then he let off the line-lock and powered out of his burnout, he then revved in neutral to "clean out" the motor before launching. He did everything right, and it's clear that he knew the proper 1/4 mile drag race sequence -- right up to moving his car ahead as if to roll into the pre-stage beam. (but for some reason, in that in-car segment he was shifting much slower than in his first two runs)
Sorry, I don't mean to come across as a know-it-all, but I was waiting for someone to say that the "grinding" sound was normal for a dogbox, and when nobody did, I figured I should set the record straight on that.
By the way, did that look like an Arabic licence plate?

Since gas is soo cheap for them and they can pretty much get racing fuel for the price of 87 octane no wonder they have fast cars.
