shift at what RPM

Just curious...at what RPM do you 6MT owners tend to upshift under normal driving circumstances. I know our max HP is near red-line and it sure is damn fun to push it now and again, but I would imagine that such aggressive driving routinely can't be good for the drive train.

Re: shift at what RPM

The torque peak rpm is the point of maximum acceleration, so that would be a reasonable easy point to shift for maximizing economy and long term durability.
But isn't performance why you bought the G35? Surely not fuel economy.

When I'm in traffic I shift at 3k. If there's nobody in front of me I take it to 4k. I save the 5k and 6k shifts for special occasions.

When my engine is not warmed up, I shift under 2k and am a complete hazard to the road. Normally I shift at about 3k or so. If I'm feeling good, at about 4.5k. When I see a civic, at about 6.4k.

Re: shift at what RPM

Does it not mess up the transmission to start out in 2nd gear??? I often want to since the 1st to 2nd shift isn't always smooth but I thought it wears on your clutch if you start in 2nd???

To answer the question, I usually shift at 3K (and at least 4+K once, everytime I crank the car :-) and I still average 20mpg.

Re: shift at what RPM

before im up to temp i shift around 2.2-2.4k and accelerate VERY slowly. (take around 1.5 miles to get up to 30mph in my neighborhood. Once im up to temp i shift around 3k if im still accelerating.... if im up at like 45-50mph in 4th (2500ish) then i usually will throw it into 5th. I try to save gas when im not racing around. I prolly get either 22mpg or 10 mpg... nothing in between. I am very good about economy about 80% of the time... and the other 20%... well LOL. Yes its bad for ur clutch if u start out in 2nd gear. Dont do it.... i dont care about the smooth/not smooth shift from 1st to 2nd although i can usually do just fine if i let my revs drop to the perfcect number....
