question about leaving the g35 undriven

I will soon be going off to college and I do not plan on taking my g35 coupe with me. I don't want to give everyone rides or people asking me to drive it so I'll be leaving it sitting in my garage for at least 3 months. If I ask my parents to turn on the engine for me everyday and leave it on for about 5 minutes will that be ok? WHat else would I have to do?

Re: question about leaving the g35 undriven

Here's lessons from the aviation world, where we deal with air cooled engines and 50 wt oil. I'm speculating that the same principles apply with an automotive engine.

Within a week the oil is no longer protecting the cylinder walls. That's when the moisture begins to pit or corrode the inside of your engine. The solution is to get your engine at at least 180 degrees and run it for 40 minutes. This gets rid of the H2O in the engine and recoats the metal for another week or two. It has to be hot enough to make vapor out of the moisture and get it to exit through the exhaust. 5 minutes will do more harm than good, effectively scraping corroding metal against one another and not getting rid of all the water.

Ask someone to drive it to the grocery store once a week, or better yet take it out on the highway and run her hot off a few exit ramps. Deposits build in your valves and you need some WOT here and there.

Or, you could take it with you and be assertive enough to fend off the attackers.

Re: question about leaving the g35 undriven

I've put my vehicles away b4 for extended periods and found that starting once a week or so is good, and letting it run for at least 10 minutes will suffice. Even better would be to drive it a few miles.
Disconnect the battery during idle times to make sure it doesn't go flat.
Make sure the fluid levels are good, gas tank full, and the engine oil is fresh when you put her away. Should be fine.

Re: question about leaving the g35 undriven

In the past I have disconnected the battery, and put it up on blocks to save the tires.

Don't know if the blocking is necessary with the low profile tires on the G, but with my Accord, it helped.

Good luck.

I read that it does lose some of it's potency, but I've never had any issues with that.
What will happen if you don't fill the tank is water will condense in the tank causing all kinds of problems for you. The way to prevent that is to fill the tank so there's no air space for the condesation to form.
The old gas you have left in the tank isn't prolly the best in the world but once the car is driven again regularly, it soon goes.

You have no choice but to have some gas in the tank anyway-- right? So the best thing to do is to fill it.
You can put a gas and tank treatment in the tank prior to storing to help condition the gas and protect the tank.

Re: question about leaving the g35 undriven

A good rule of thumb is to never crank a car unless you plan on letting it run till the coolant and oil warms to operating temperature.........10 minutes minimum, 15 minutes at idle in cold weather.
A single cold start [relative at 70F is cold compared to 200F] creates more wear than driving 100 miles at 60 mph after warm up!
All those million mile test never shut the engine off unless changing oil [every 3,000 miles miles every 50 running hours or so]..............10,000 starts [3 x 10 years] is like a MILLION miles.

Change the oil every 3 months whether it drives a mile or not if it runs at idle......Idle is worse than driving 2400 rpms because the fuel is so much richer til it warms up!

Should be jacked up to save the tires taking a permanent set with temperature cycling.

I'd sell the car and get a beater. With the money saved, you could get a nice car when you really need it.

Re: question about leaving the g35 undriven

Thanks guys for your help. I'll miss my car while I'm at college. I thought I would go crazy when I couldn't drive it for a week when I went on a trip. But I guess I don't really have a choice. Thanks for your help

Why don' t you let us all know where you live and park your G, then we can each take turns driving your car while your away. You wouldn't have to worry about it idling, we can drive it nice and hard to eliminate any carbon deposits. j/k

I left my old RX7 in my garage while I was away for about 2yrs. other than the plugs fouling, (common in rotary engines at idle), the car was fine......battery needed a recharge once, and a few tanks of fuel to keep it topped off......You should be fine..

Re: question about leaving the g35 undriven

When I went to Iraq, I left it in a friends garage for 6 months. A neighbor started it about once a week for a few minutes, but other than that I didnt do anything unusual. It was fine and started right up when I got home.
